  • A cold case from the last Glacial Maximum

Open Access•Kerstin Pasda, Gertrud E Rössner et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026

Remains of at least 72 skeletal elements and a tusk of one woolly mammoth were unearthed from an Upper Würmian palaeo-channel fill and adjacent overbank deposits in southeastern Germany. The skeletal remains are from a large but not yet fully grown individual. Cut marks on several ribs indicate human involvement. However, archaeological traces, such as artefacts or settlement remains, were not recovered. The individual was radiocarbon-dated to 26…

  • A cold case from the last glacial maximum

Open Access•Philipp Stojakowits, Christoph Mayr et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026

A partial skeleton of a mammoth was found that has been dated to the Last Glacial Maximum. • The mammoth was deposited in a former pond and on its banks. • The pollen record demonstrates that the mammoth died during cold stadial conditions. • Collagen isotope values agree with other mammoth finds from the so-called mammoth steppe. One tusk and remains of at least 72 skeletal elements of woolly mammoth were unearthed from deposits of a palaeo-chan…

  • The Late Middle and Early Upper Palaeolithic in Crimea (Ukraine)—A Review of the Neanderthal Refugium Hypothesis

    Open Access•Emily M Pigott, Thorsten Uthmeier et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2024•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 43

The Crimean Peninsula contains numerous important Palaeolithic sites. It has been considered a potential Neanderthal refugium in Eurasia prior to their disappearance or assimilation, and subsequent replacement by Homo sapiens . This understanding is primarily drawn from lithic technological analysis and radiocarbon dating. However, recent developments in the latter suggest that many of the previously obtained radiocarbon dates from Crimean sites …

  • Gravettians in the Altmühl Valley”? Comprehensive Reassessment and New Data from the Sequence from the Abri I im Dorf (Neuessing, Bavaria, Germany)

Open Access•A Calvo, Kerstin Pasda et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2024•Referencias: 13

Due to the high density of cave and rock shelter sites, the Altmühl Valley is one of the most essential regions of southern German Palaeolithic research. The site presented in this paper, the Abri I im Dorf, lies within the main concentration of Palaeolithic sites found in this valley, extending along its lowest stretch between Riedenburg and its confluence into the Danube in Kelheim. We present the results achieved in reassessing the archaeo-str…

  • Heat Treatment of Flint at the Late Neanderthal Site Sesselfelsgrotte (Germany)

Open Access•Aviad Agam, Merlin Hattermann et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2023

We examined lithic artifacts from the late Neanderthal site Sesselfelsgrotte (Bavaria, Germany) in order to evaluate the possibility of fire use and intentional flint heat treatment performed by late Neanderthals. We analyzed 1113 flint pieces from the G-layer complex (~60 to 45 kya; Micoquian) and 946 from the lower-layer complex (~115 to 70 kya; Mousterian). Based on macroscopic traits associated with the exposure of flint to heat and fire, we …

  • From Hunter-Gatherers to Farmers

    Open Access•Y H Hilbert, Matthias López Correa et al.•ARTICLE•Paléorient•2023•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 57

Archaeological investigations of the Terminal Pleistocene and Early Holocene human occupation of the nearly 3 million square kilometres that make up the vast and diverse landscapes of the Arabian Peninsula are hampered by a series of shortcomings. Some of the problems when trying to reconstruct human occupation and behaviour based on material culture are imposed by the state of preservation of archaeological finds. The shift from dry to wet and b…

  • A diachronic perspective on lithic raw material procurement strategies and mobility

Open Access•Birgit Gehlen, Jehanne Affolter et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2022•Referencias: 4

Analysis of prehistoric lithic artefacts helps to answer a wide array of questions concerning archaeological contexts and prehistoric human behaviour. During three projects, we studied the origin of the raw materials of 32 inventories from the Late Glacial and Early Holocene in northwest and southern Germany. The basal petrographic analysis was conducted by the geologist and petro-archaeologist Jehanne Affolter. In addition, data of more than 60 …

After the Last Glacial Maximum, the Swabian and Franconian Jura (in SW and SE Germany, respectively) were repopulated by Magdalenian hunter-gatherers within the same communication network. However, while the Magdalenian settlement of the Swabian Jura dates to 17-14 ka cal BP, permanent Magdalenian occupations in the Franconian Jura date to 15-14 ka cal BP. In comparison with its western counterpart, the Franconian Jura was mostly excavated in the…

  • Episodes of Magdalenian Hunter-Gatherers in the Upper Gallery of Tuc d’Audoubert (Ariège, France)

Open Access•Andreas Pastoors, Tilman Lenssen-Erz et al.•CHAPTER•Reading Prehistoric Human Tracks•2021

The Tuc d’Audoubert cave (Ariège, France) offers unique insights into the life of Late Pleistocene hunters-gatherers due to its exceptionally good preservation conditions. This is especially true for the 300 footprints in the upper gallery of the cave. Even for the layperson, some trackways are easily recognized. Short episodes of past life become tangible. The spectrum of scientific analytic methods used in western science has not yet provided a…

At Kabazi V, level III/4-2, the entire debris from the manufacture of a bifacial preform was found deposited in a small anthropogenic pit. The bifacial preform itself was missing. The fact that it was possible to refit all larger blanks, as well as several chips, from the pit, whereas refits with artifacts discarded on the surface of the corresponding archeological level were not found, underlines the character of the pit's contents as a closed f…
