  • The Economics of Privacy

Avi Goldfarb, Catherine Tucker•BOOK•The Economics of Privacy•2024

A foundational new collection examining the mechanics of privacy in the digital age. The falling costs of collecting, storing, and processing data have allowed firms and governments to improve their products and services, but have also created databases with detailed individual-level data that raise privacy concerns. This volume summarizes the research on the economics of privacy and identifies open questions on the value of privacy, the roles of…

  • Digital Economics

Alvin Goldfarb, Avi Goldfarb et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Literature•2019•References: 14

Digital technology is the representation of information in bits. This technology has reduced the cost of storage, computation, and transmission of data. Research on digital economics examines whether and how digital technology changes economic activity. In this review, we emphasize the reduction in five distinct economic costs associated with digital economic activity: search costs, replication costs, transportation costs, tracking costs, and ver…

  • Economics of Privacy and User‐Generated Content

Open Access•Catherine Tucker, Catherine E Tucker•OTHER•Emerging Trends in the Social and…•2015

The Internet has allowed an unprecedented expansion of the data firms can collect and the amount of content users can upload. Understanding the forces that shape the demand and supply of this content is critical for understanding the likely evolution of the Internet. We review foundational and cutting‐edge research on the economics of privacy and user‐generated content (UGC), and sketch out issues for future research.

  • Child Poverty During the Years of the Great Recession: An Analysis of Racial Differences Among Immigrants and US Natives

  • Recent Trends in Coverage of the Mexican-Born Population of the United States: Results From Applying Multiple Methods Across Time

    Open Access•Jennifer Van Hook, Frank D Bean et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•2014•Cited by: 15•References: 27

The accuracy of counts of U.S. racial/ethnic and immigrant groups depends on the coverage of the foreign-born in official data. Because Mexicans constitute by far the largest single national-origin group among the foreign-born in the United States, we compile new evidence about the coverage of the Mexican-born population in the 2000 census and 2001–2010 American Community Survey (ACS) using three techniques: a death registration, a birth registra…

  • Surplus Chinese Men: Demographic Determinants of the Sex Ratio at Marriageable Ages in China

    Open Access•Catherine Tucker, Jennifer Van Hook•ARTICLE•Population and Development Review•2013•Cited by: 14•References: 22

We explore the demographic factors contributing to China's unbalanced sex ratio at marriagable ages. We develop a stable population model of the sex ratio at marriagable ages, and compare a series of population projections with alternative underlying assumptions about the key demographic inputs. The stable population model demonstrates that several demographic factors interact to influence the sex ratio at marriagable ages, including the sex rati…

    Open Access•Edwin Castellanos, Edwin J Castellanos et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2012•Cited by: 7•References: 11

  • Religion and Migration around the Globe: Introducing the Global Religion and Migration Database

    Open Access•Phillip Connor, Catherine Tucker•ARTICLE•International Migration Review•2011•Cited by: 5•References: 10

International migration is a global phenomenon involving nearly 215 million people, equivalent to 3% of the world's population. Previous databases of global migration catalog international migration using a variety of variables (sex, education, age); however, religion is rarely addressed within these data sets. Representing nearly half a million data points, the Global Religion and Migration Database (GRMD) was constructed – the only global datab…

  • Private Goods and Common Property: Pottery Production in a Honduran Lenca Community

    C M Tucker, Catherine Tucker•ARTICLE•Human Organization•2010

Most research on common property focuses on common-pool goods, which are characterized by difficulty of exclusion and vulnerability to depletion (subtractability). Few studies have addressed common property arrangements for

  • Integrating Social Justice Advocacy With National Standards of Practice: Implications for School Counselor Education

    Open Access•Andrea L Dixon, Catherine Tucker et al.•ARTICLE•Counselor Education and Supervision•2010•Cited by: 2•References: 12

Social justice in the education of all K-12 students begins with school counselors; preparing school counselors as advocates and leaders who can implement these principles in U.S. schools begins with counselor educators. Suggestions for intentional preparation of school counselors to be social justice advocates in schools by integrating the principles of the National Center for Transforming School Counseling with the American School Counselor Ass…

  • Responding to the coffee crisis: A pilot study of farmers' adaptations in Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras

    Open Access•Hallie Eakin, C M Tucker et al.•ARTICLE•Geographical Journal•2006•Cited by: 51•References: 23

This article explores the impacts of market shocks and institutional change on smallholder livelihoods, and the challenge of adaptation in Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras. The rapid decline in coffee prices since the dissolution of the International Coffee Agreement in 1989 has had widespread and profound impacts across coffee-producing regions. The data collected in the three case studies of this project confirm the severity of the impact, partic…

  • Sources of Meat in Colonial Diets: Faunal Evidence from Two Nineteenth Century Tasmanian Whaling Stations

    Susan Lawrence, C M Tucker et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2002

The analysis of faunal assemblages from two nineteenth century Tasmanian whaling stations provides information about meat in colonial diets. The assemblages include a combination of native mammal, bird, and fish species and European domesticates. The presence of diverse native species indicates occasional opportunistic hunting rather than a significant incorporation of local fauna in the subsistence system. The bulk of meat consumed was beef, por…

  • Fragmentation of a Landscape: Incorporating landscape metrics into satellite analyses of land-cover change

James Southworth, Jane Southworth et al.•ARTICLE•Landscape Research•2002•Cited by: 8•References: 25

The relationship between trajectories of forest-cover change and the biophysical and social characteristics of the landscape in the mountains of Western Honduras is addressed. Metrics of land-cover change were used to infer patterns of land-use change, using Landsat TM imagery from 1987, 1991 and 1996. With 15-20% of the land cover changing across each two-date period, the study landscape was very dynamic. Areas of reforestation were significantl…

  • The Influence of Accessibility, Local Institutions, and Socioeconomic Factors on Forest Cover Change in the Mountains of Western Honduras

Open Access•James Southworth, Jane Southworth et al.•ARTICLE•Mountain Research and Development•2001

Tropical deforestation poses a threat to ecological sustainability and socioeconomic development in many parts of the world. Information on forest transformations is especially pertinent in sensitive ecological zones such as mountainous regions, where forest cover protects steep slopes and thin soils from erosion. Such areas are frequently unsuitable for agriculture, but inhabitants may have few alternatives to meet subsistence needs. Understandi…
