The feasibility of passively tracking children's TV viewing and mobile device use in naturalistic settings
Research on children's technology and digital media (TDM) is hampered by a lack of robust approaches for assessing TDM use. This study assessed the feasibility of passively measuring children's TV screens and mobile devices (TDM) in a naturalistic setting. In the three-day feasibility study, FLASH-TV was set up on one to two TVs the child (5-12 year olds) typically used in the home (n=20). Children's mobile device use was assessed with either the…
Spanish Version of the Family Health Behavior Scale
Different studies around the world indicate that the percentages of overweight and obesity in childhood and adolescence are high. In this context, it would be useful to have a common, valid, and reliable instrument to assess health behaviors of families that allows comparisons of data from different countries. The objective is the adaptation of a Spanish version of the Family Health Behavior Scale (FHBS). The questionnaire originally developed by…
Obesity status trajectory groups among elementary school children
Boys, Hispanic and non-Hispanic Black children were at higher risk of being overweight or obese throughout their elementary school years, supporting the need for obesity treatment. Post kindergarten and post second grade summer months were times when some children transitioned into overweight/obesity. It will be important to identify which behavioral factors (e.g., diet, physical activity, sedentary behaviors, and/or sleep) predisposed children t…
The Impact of Acculturation Level on Weight Status and Weight Outcomes in Hispanic Children
A one‐year school‐based diet/exercise intervention improves non‐traditional disease biomarkers in Mexican‐American children
School-based interventions are an effective way to treat childhood obesity. The purpose of the present study was to biologically validate an established school-based intervention designed to reduce standardised body mass index (zBMI) over a period of 12 months. This intervention focused on a subset of Mexican-American children who were participating in a larger clinical weight loss study. Plasma samples were analysed from self-identified Mexican-…
