Freezing time, freezing in time
Considering that many fresh food items require domestic cold storage, understanding the role of appliances such as freezers is critical to reducing greenhouse gas emissions relating to domestic food waste and energy use. Using a social practices approach, this article reports on a study of cold storage and food waste practices, particularly freezing relating to meat, in 20 Australian households. Householders were interviewed twice, over winter an…
Flammable cladding and the effects on homeowner well-being
Housing quality impacts on occupant well-being. Flammable cladding is a housing quality defect that has been identified on thousands of buildings in Australia. Little is known about the impact of flammable cladding upon homeowners and the implications for policy. The well-being of homeowners in residential apartment buildings with flammable cladding (from low to extreme risk) was explored through sixteen one-hour semi-structured interviews. Those…
The environmental impacts of operating an Antarctic research station
We present a life cycle assessment (LCA) of the operation of Casey Station in Antarctica. The LCA included quantifying material and energy flows, modeling of elementary flows, and subsequent environmental impacts. Environmental impacts were dominated by emissions associated with freight operations and electricity cogeneration. A participatory design approach was used to identify options to reduce environmental impacts, which included improving fr…
Development of an environmental impact reduction strategy for Australia's Antarctic infrastructure
In this article, we first describe aspects of the environmental impact reduction strategy that was developed in conjunction with a life cycle assessment undertaken for the operations necessary to support Australia's largest Antarctic research station, Casey Station. The article then identifies future research and operational improvement opportunities for the Australian Antarctic Division, who is responsible for Australia's presence in Antarctica.…
