  • The anatomy of austerity in Finnish media

    Open Access•Eliisa Vainikka, Pihla Toivanen•ARTICLE•European Journal of Communication•2024•References: 17

This article investigates how four Finnish media outlets, Helsingin Sanomat, YLE, Iltalehti and STT, framed the discussions about austerity policies and their impacts on Finland's national identity from 1998 to 2019. Using historical discourse analysis, the article shows the arc of austerity reporting and how Finland's position and role in the Euro crisis changed during the years. The analysis reveals something about the national self-understandi…

  • Blurring boundaries of expert knowledge and stakeholder agenda – News media as a knowledge broker in the Finnish alcohol policy debate

Open Access•Olli Seuri, Anu Katainen et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Qualitative Research in…•2023

The news media are central to discussion on public policy as journalists regulate the flow and exchange of policy-relevant knowledge. In this article, we concentrated on the media’s role as a knowledge broker, giving voice to and operating between different policy actors during the 2018 Alcohol Act reform in Finland. Particular attention was given to the way the alcohol industry stakeholders were positioned as information sources in the news repo…

  • Remediation in the hybrid media environment

    Open Access•Pihla Toivanen, Matti Nelimarkka et al.•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2021•Cited by: 9•References: 19

We examine the position of five online-only ‘countermedia’ publications often publicly labelled as ‘fake media’ and use them to indicate how the ‘post-truth era’ takes place. Both academic and public discussions perceive countermedia as separate and distinct from the established, professionally produced journalist media outlets. We argue that the studied outlets are an integral part of the hybrid media environment. Our data show countermedia main…

  • Aihemallinnus hybridin mediatapahtuman ja merkitysten kierron tutkimuksessa

    Open Access•Pihla Toivanen, Jukka Huhtamäki et al.•ARTICLE•Media & viestintä•2020

Laskennallisten menetelmien käyttö viestintätieteissä on viime vuosina herättänyt kasvavaa kiinnostusta.

  • Shades of hatred online

Open Access•Asta Zelenkauskaite, Pihla Toivanen et al.•ARTICLE•First Monday•2020

The 4chan /pol/ platform is a controversial online space on which a surge in hate speech has been observed. While recent research indicates that events may lead to more hate speech, empirical evidence on the phenomenon remains limited. This study analyzes 4chan /pol/ user activity during the mass shootings in Christchurch and Pittsburgh and compares the frequency and nature of user activity prior to these events. We find not only a surge in the u…
