Understanding and Addressing Teacher Shortages in Austria
Teacher shortages have become a global phenomenon, affecting educational systems across many countries. However, the strategies adopted to address it differ considerably. This study gives a first, detailed account of the reasons and effects of teacher shortages in Austria. For this purpose, a number of documents were analysed: 120 newspaper reports (to mirror the public debate), 43 parliamentary questions and ministerial responses (to mirror the …
Satisfaction and general well-being of Austrian student teachers who enter the teaching profession while still studying
The teacher shortage is an increasingly urgent challenge for the Austrian education system. Consequently, the Austrian government recruits student teachers who are still in bachelor’s or master’s programmes to fill open positions. This empirical study examined the demands and resources that student teachers experience in their jobs and studies. Based on the job demands-resources model, we investigated the health effects and motivation impacting s…
School decentralization as a process of differentiation, hierarchization and selection
The Austrian 'school autonomy policy', which allowed schools to develop specific 'curricular profiles', is taken as an example for discussing processes and effects of school decentralization policies. Data from school case studies (based on qualitative interviews and document analysis) are used to analyse and interpret the processes by which schools and teachers take up policy innovations and translate it into action and structures on school and …

We conducted research in environmental history with students from a technical secondary school. Some participants of the project Our Environment Has a History probably doubted the feasibility at the outset of this transdisciplinary project in 2008. After two years' work we discuss the challenges of the project, i.e., the role definitions and cultural differences in the conception of knowledge, research and learning between school and academia, an…
