  • Being there in sport, exercise and health ethnography

Open Access•Ben Powi, Chris Hughes et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research in Sport and…•2026

This article explores what it means to be there in ethnographic research within sport, exercise and health contexts. Drawing upon an eighteen-month ethnography of a bouldering community, we conceptualise being there not merely as physical presence, but as a skilled and intentional approach to conducting ethnography. Through a somatic layered account centred on climbing shoes, we illuminate how corporeal immersion facilitates nuanced, reflexive un…

  • A Transparent Curriculum Design and Capability-Based Assessment Portfolio Facilitates Self-Directed Learning

    Open Access•Catherine M Dean, Hayley Harris et al.•ARTICLE•Education Sciences•2023

This paper describes the design, implementation, and evaluation of a medical degree which uses a capability framework, programmatic assessment, and an assessment portfolio to facilitate feedback literacy and self-directed learning. The Macquarie MD outcomes are expressed through four graduate capabilities, each having two aspects and defined expectation standards for the two two-year stages. Assessments of capability development and Entrustable P…

  • An assessment of the ability of a novel mulch to stabilise sand dunes in the Sistan region of Iran

Gholamheidar Zoraghi, Kazem Shabani Goraji et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

The Sistan region in south-east Iran is subject to highly active wind erosion and is considered one of the most important sources of dust in south-west Asia. This research was concerned with the assessment of the efficiency of mulches in stabilising sand dunes. The mulches are mixtures of local silty loam soil and hydrated lime in different concentrations, which were sprinkled on plots on the surface of sand dunes. The amount of wind erosion was …

  • Nuancing the critique of commercialisation in schools

Anne Hogan, Anna Hogan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Education Policy•2018•Cited by: 7•References: 29

This paper investigates the commercialisation of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) in Australian schools. Specifically, it focuses on understanding why teachers value commercial resources, and how they enact these in their classrooms. Theorising around teacher agency suggests teachers are now choosing to use a range of commercial resources and view these as important additions to their pedagogical toolbox. Teachers want high quality resources, …

  • A Song of the Paddle

    Chris Hughes, Anna Hogan•ARTICLE•Leisure Studies•2018•Cited by: 2•References: 19

This paper is a critical exercise in haptic aesthetics. The subject matter of such an inquiry is a rather simple one, namely, me in a canoe with a paddle and nowhere in particular to go, in essence, a form of leisure travel explained phenomenologically. Such humble beginnings are interspersed with arguments that illustrate haptic aesthetics along epistemological lines. Further still, it will be shown that paddling as a sensuous leisure activity i…

  • Effects of dust deposition from two major dust source regions of Iran on wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) production

    Z Hatami, Zahra M Hatami et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2017

In order to study the effects of dust on yield and yield components of wheat, an experiment was conducted in a factorial layout based on a randomized complete block design with three replicates in Mashhad, Iran in 2015. The experimental factors included the concentration of dust at three levels (0, 500 and 1500 μg.m−3), the number of dust applications (one, two and three) and the type of dust. The results showed that biological yield, grain yield…

  • Commercialising comparison

Anne Hogan, Anna Hogan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Education Policy•2016•Cited by: 14•References: 39

This paper provides a critical policy analysis of The Learning Curve (TLC) (2012), an initiative developed by the multinational edu-business, Pearson, in conjunction with the Economist Intelligence Unit. TLC exemplifies the commercialising of comparison and the efforts of edu-businesses to strategically position themselves in education policy processes globally. In analysing TLC, our account seeks to proffer a critical analysis of this emerging p…
