  • Standardized Educational Assessments

Axel Rivas•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Governance and…•2023

In the last 25 years, Latin America became a region overwhelmed with standardized educational assessments. Standardized assessments point to a major change in the governance of education systems, not only because they enter as policy inputs for decision-making, but also because they rise to the status of high-stakes standardized assessments where rankings on outcomes are published so that parents can make informed decisions regarding school choic…

• The long road to systemic improvement in education

    Axel Rivas•ARTICLE•Comparative Education•2022•References: 8

The study compared 83 subnational educational systems of three federal countries in Latin America: Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico. Based on a mixed methodology, we analysed the evolution of multiple educational indicators …

Axel Rivas, Martín Guillermo Scasso•ARTICLE•Journal of Education Policy•2021•References: 45

Since 2000, the PISA test implemented by OECD has become the prime benchmark for international comparisons in education. The 2015 PISA edition introduced methodological changes that altered the nature of its results. PISA made no longer valid non-reached items of the final part of the test, assuming that those unanswered questions were more a problem of motivation than skills. Latin American countries were the only ones that had a large proportio…

  • Race to the classroom

    Axel Rivas, Belén Sánchez•ARTICLE•Compare A Journal of Comparative…•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 11

During the first years of the new century, Latin America went through significant political changes in a period of economic growth. In education, we identify a ‘regulatory governance turn’ characterised by the emergence of four policy instruments: 1-New performance-based teaching career regulations with teachers' evaluations, 2-Curricular standards and increasing regulation via textbook provision, 3-Test-based accountability based on high-stakes …
