Growing Up in Germany in the Great Recession: Perceptions of Social Justice and Disorientation
Objective information on the current financial and economic crisis is plentifully available. Issues concerning the fair distribution of burdens are emerging, causing uncertainty not confined to the middle class. The young generation in particular faces significant challenges when entering the world of work. How do young people react? Do they feel increasingly disoriented? Are their perceptions of justice changing? How significant are the influenc…
Youth and political participation — empirical results for Germany within a European context
Impatience with politics in Germany, disenchantment with political commitment and individualization are labels frequently attached to the political involvement of young people. Empirical analyses, however, show a rather more complex picture. A basic willingness to become politically involved and to express political opinions is apparent. Indeed, many young people make use of numerous and varied opportunities to express themselves politically, alt…

Youth and democracy in Germany
The level of satisfaction with everyday democracy was relatively high in the initial euphoria of German re-unification, particularly in the new Laender, but soon declined considerably. The 1990s showed that support for the democratic idea weakens when the discrepancy between the ideal and the reality of everyday politics becomes too wide. This is one of the key results of the recurrent youth surveys carried out by the German Youth Institute. For …
Desinterest for politics in Eastern and Western Germany Standpoint of German adolescents and young adults The discontent and distrust towards politicians, particularly in the new Länder, are at the core of the disinterest inspired by politics. However, the comparison with the adult population in various fields suggests that this phenomenon is not exclusively juvenile. Furthermore, the changes do not indicate any erosion of the young people’s rela…
Youth and Housing in Germany and the European Union
Growing up in the Federal Republic of Germany: Chance and risk in a modern Sozialstaat 1
Following reunification in 1990, young Germans are living in a unique set of social and economic circumstances in which both existing and new divisions and conflicts are making themselves sharply felt: chances and risks, circumstances and prospects, attitudes and behaviour differ between the east and the west. At the same time, Germany's long‐established guestworker communities have been joined by increasing numbers of immigrants and migrant work…
