  • Multi-risks attributed to climate change and urbanization in East Africa

    Open Access•Alexander Fekete, V S Saravanan•ARTICLE•African Geographical Review•2024

This study analyzed research on East Africa, multiple risks and Climate Change using bibliometric analysis. The main findings are that for many countries in East Africa, studies are absent, even on single risk assessments. Overall, multi-risk assessments that analyze hazard and impact chains are missing. Only a few cities have received scientific attention at the city level. The findings can help scientists as well as policymakers identify resear…

Diseases are rapidly urbanizing. Ageing infrastructures, high levels of inequality, poor urban governance, rapidly growing economies and highly dense and mobile populations all create environments rife for water-borne diseases. This article analyzes the role of institutions as crosscutting entities among a myriad of factors that breed water-borne diseases in the city of Ahmedabad, India. It applies 'path dependency' and a 'rational choice' perspe…

  • Metabolized‐Water Breeding Diseases in Urban India

Open Access•V S Saravanan, Dileep Mavalankar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Industrial Ecology•2015

Studies on urban metabolism have provided important insights in the material and sociopolitical issues associated with the flow of water. However, there is a dearth of studies that reveal how infrastructure, as a hybrid of social and material construct, facilitates disease emergence. The article brings together urban metabolism, political ecology, and anthropological studies to examine the social construction and reconstruction of the material fl…

  • Managing tank cascades in Southern India

    Open Access•Saravanan V S, V S Saravanan•ARTICLE•Social Change•2002•References: 13

While there is growing consensus within the international development circles that sustainable development should be based on local-level solutions derived from community initiatives, there is an equally growing perception that the practical implementation of what is often termed ‘community-based natural resource management’ or co-management, often falls short of expectations. This paper seeks to throw some light on issues in this area by examini…
