Benchmarking Automated Detection and Classification Approaches for Long‐Term Acoustic Monitoring of Endangered Species
Recent advances in deep learning and transfer learning have revolutionized our ability for the automated detection of acoustic signals from long‐term soundscape recordings. Effective automated detection approaches can vastly improve our ability to monitor endangered species, like gibbons. Here, we provide a benchmark for the automated detection of female duet contributions from southern yellow‐cheeked crested gibbons ( Nomascus gabriellae ) recor…
Pathways to sustainable development
This study examines the impact of government spending on sustainable development and the moderating role of financial development using a panel dataset of 45 developing countries (2002–2023) and the Panel-ARDL model with the PMG estimator. Robustness checks include CS-ARDL, FMOLS, DOLS, and MMQR. The findings confirm a positive and significant effect of government spending on sustainability, which strengthens at higher sustainability levels. Fina…
Community-based mobile tuberculosis clinics in rural Madagascar
INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis (TB) remains an important public health challenge globally. Madagascar faces a substantial TB burden despite enhanced efforts from its national TB control programme. This necessitates innovative and context-specific TB prevention and care interventions that are both impactful and cost-effective. We evaluated the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a community-based mobile TB clinic intervention in a remote rural are…

How do free healthcare policies impact utilization of maternal and child health services in fragile settings? Evidence from a controlled interrupted time series analysis in Burkina Faso
Burkina Faso has implemented a nationwide free healthcare policy (gratuité) for pregnant and lactating women and children under 5 years since April 2016. Studies have shown that free healthcare policies can increase healthcare service use. However, the emerging coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, escalating insecurity and the political situation in recent years might have affected the implementation of such policies. No studies have looked at whet…
Passive acoustic monitoring using smartphones reveals an alarming gibbon decline in a protected area in the central Annamite Mountains, Vietnam
Monitoring populations is critical for understanding how they respond to anthropogenic disturbance and for management of protected areas. The use of passive acoustic monitoring can improve monitoring efforts as it allows for collection of data on vocal animals at spatial and temporal scales that are difficult using only human observers. In this study, we used a multiseason occupancy model to monitor occurrence, apparent extinction, and colonizati…
Monitoring occurrence, extinction, and colonization probabilities for gibbon populations
All gibbon species (Family: Hylobatidae ) are considered threatened with extinction and recognized on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. Because gibbons are one of the most threatened families of primates, monitoring their status is now critically important. Long‐term monitoring programs applying occupancy approaches, in addition to assessing occurrence probability, improves understanding of other p…
What happens when performance-based financing meets free healthcare? Evidence from an interrupted time-series analysis
In spite of the wide attention performance-based financing (PBF) has received over the past decade, no evidence is available on its impacts on quantity and mix of service provision nor on its interaction with parallel health financing interventions. Our study aimed to examine the PBF impact on quantity and mix of service provision in Burkina Faso, while accounting for the parallel introduction of a free healthcare policy. We used Health Managemen…
The impact of reducing and eliminating user fees on facility-based delivery
User fee reduction and removal policies have been the object of extensive research, but little rigorous evidence exists on their sustained effects in relation to use of delivery care services, and no evidence exists on the effects of partial reduction compared with full removal of user fees. We aimed to fill these knowledge gaps by assessing sustained effects of both partial reduction and complete removal of user fees on utilization of facility-b…
