  • Prevalence, locations and predictors of attitudes accepting both intimate partner violence and additional forms of violence against women and girls in South Sudan

    Open Access•A I Lamadrid, Ignacio Leiva-Escobar et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

Most research on violence against women and girls (VAWG) in South Sudan has focused on intimate partner violence (IPV) neglecting other forms of VAWG. This research aims to determine the prevalence of attitudes accepting IPV and whether it overlaps with attitudes accepting additional forms of VAWG (child marriage, raiding villages for women during cattle rustling or other raids or female genital mutilation) in South Sudanese men and women, or are…

  • Evaluation of two red cell inclusion staining methods for assessing spleen function among sickle cell disease patients in North-East Nigeria

    Open Access•Adama I Ladu, Ngamarju A Satumari et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

The loss of splenic function is associated with an increased risk of infection in sickle cell disease (SCD); however, spleen function is rarely documented among SCD patients in Africa, due partly to the non-availability of sophisticated techniques such as scintigraphy. Methods of assessing splenic function which may be achievable in resource-poor settings include counting red blood cells (RBC) containing Howell Jolly Bodies (HJB) and RBC containi…

  • Difference in HIV prevalence by testing venue

Joseph Ouma, Caroline Jeffery et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2021

Growing demand for use of Health Facility (HF) HIV testing data, in addition to other testing data to obtain district level HIV prevalence requires understanding the comparability of these various sources. We analysed the 2011 Uganda AIDS indicator survey data to assess: the proportion of people tested for HIV across Uganda by venue of testing; HIV prevalence ratio for those tested in a HF compared to those tested in community setting; [Katz, D.,…

  • Is development aid to strengthen health systems during protracted conflict a useful investment? The case of South Sudan, 2011–2015

Open Access•Joseph J Valadez, Sima Berendes et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2020

Introduction: Is achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16 (building peaceful societies) a precondition for achieving SDG 3 (health and well-being in all societies, including conflict-affected countries)? Do health system investments in conflict-affected countries waste resources or benefit the public's health? To answer these questions, we examine the maternal, newborn, child and reproductive health (MNCRH) service provision during pr…

  • Combining national survey with facility-based HIV testing data to obtain more accurate estimate of HIV prevalence in districts in Uganda

Open Access•Joseph Ouma, Caroline Jeffery et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2020

Facility data can be combined with population survey data to obtain more accurate HIV prevalence estimates for geographical areas with small population survey sample sizes. We recommend use of the methodology by district level managers to obtain more accurate HIV prevalence estimates to guide decision making without incurring additional data collection costs

  • Measuring health system resilience in a highly fragile nation during protracted conflict

    Open Access•Jackline A Odhiambo, Jackline Odhiambo et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 24

Health systems resilience (HSR) is defined as the ability of a health system to continue providing normal services in response to a crisis, making it a critical concept for analysis of health systems in fragile and conflict-affected settings (FCAS). However, no consensus for this definition exists and even less about how to measure HSR. We examine three current HSR definitions (maintaining function, improving function and achieving health system …

  • Associations with HIV testing in Uganda

Caroline Jeffery, Colin Beckworth et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2016

Beginning in 2003, Uganda used Lot Quality Assurance Sampling (LQAS) to assist district managers collect and use data to improve their human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/AIDS program. Uganda's LQAS-database (2003-2012) covers up to 73 of 112 districts. Our multidistrict analysis of the LQAS data-set at 2003-2004 and 2012 examined gender variation among adults who ever tested for HIV over time, and attributes associated with testing. Conditional l…

  • Attracting female sex workers to HIV testing and counselling in Ethiopia

Wole Ameyan, Caroline Jeffery et al.•ARTICLE•African Journal of AIDS Research•2015

Despite growing efforts to increase HIV testing and counselling (HTC) services for most at risk populations in Ethiopia, the use of these services by female sex workers (FSWs) remains low. With rising numbers of FSWs in Addis Ketema and concerns about their high risk behaviours, exploring and addressing the barriers to uptake is crucial. This qualitative study explores the barriers to utilising HTC facilities and identifies the motives and motiva…
