  • Deep Mechanical Coring Delivers New Pleistocene Archaeological Sites up to Eight Metres Below Surface in the Flemish Valley (Belgium)

Open Access•Philip Van Peer, Mark Willems et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage•2026•References: 6

Our study reveals multiple signals of Palaeolithic occupation in the Flemish Valley, a large depression in coastal northwestern Europe with an extremely sparse Pleistocene archaeological record until now. We show that mechanical coring can reveal archaeological evidence of hominin presence from deep palaeolandscapes that are inaccessible for standard survey techniques. At nine out of 41 coring sites, we encountered a total number of 56 lithic art…

Between 2010 and 2012, the Dhofar Archaeological Project has located and mapped 260 Nubian Complex occurrences across Dhofar, southern Oman. Many of these lithic assemblages are technologically homologous to the Late Nubian Industry found in Africa, while others may represent a local industry derived from classic Nubian Levallois technology. Since the pioneering days of Paleolithic archaeology in western Europe, the making of stone tools has received special attention. Numerous studies were aimed at creating systematic typologies of artifacts based on descriptions of their technical features and morphological attributes. Recently, the concept of chaîne opératoire, or "operational sequence" (sometimes called "core reduction sequence"), borrowed from French social anthropologists, has …

In the El Gouna (Hurghada) area on the Red Sea of Egypt, a Middle Holocene shell mound from around 5800 b.p. (uncalibrated radiocarbon years before A.D. 1950) has been tested by a restricted excavation. Collection of shellfish on the Red Sea shore provided subsistence opportunities for Middle Holocene groups coeval with the Early Predynastic Tasian of the Nile Valley. The El Gouna site demonstrates for the first time that shell mounds exist near …

  • A Middle Palaeolithic burial of a modern human at Taramsa Hill, Egypt

    Open Access•P M Vermeersch, Pierre Vermeersch et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•1998•Cited by: 63•References: 9

Discussion about a possible African origin of modern humans is hampered by the lack of Late Pleistocene skeletal material from the Nile valley, the likely passage-way from East Africa to Asia and Europe. Here we report the discovery of a burial of an anatomically modern child from southern Egypt. Its clear relation with Middle Palaeolithic chert extraction activities and a series of OSL dates, from correlative aeolian sands, suggests an age betwe…

  • The Nile Corridor and the Out-of-Africa Model An Examination of the Archaeological Record

    Philip Van Peer•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•1998•Cited by: 136•References: 1

This paper addresses the question of whether archaeological data-especially data from the Middle Palaeolithic-are relevant to current discussion on the origin and dispersal of modern humans. The structure of the Middle Paleolithic record of the Lower Nile Valley and adjacent deserts, a key region in the Out-of-Africa model, is examined. On the basis of the present database two archaeological complexes can be established: the Nubian complex and th…

One is related to the Levallois reduction sequence and another to the secondary modification of Levallois flakes. Furthermore, the bearing of both observations on such issues as the evidence for handedness and interassemblage variability in the Nile Valley Middle Palaeolithic is examined
