Sarah Hawke, Sarah Hawkes et al.•BOOK•Human Rights in Global Health•2018

Over the past 20-plus years, there has been a significant rise in the “partnership model” in global health. Mainly involving collaboration between public and private spheres, some partnerships include only inter-governmental organizations (IGOs). This chapter explores how three types of partnerships—global public-private partnerships (usually focused on strengthening delivery or access to specific products and technologies), public-public partner…

  • Gender, health and the 2030 agenda for sustainable development

Open Access•Mary Manandhar, Sarah Hawke et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the World Health…•2018

Gender refers to the social relationships between males and females in terms of their roles, behaviours, activities, attributes and opportunities, and which are based on different levels of power. • Strengthening capacity to apply health research evidence in policy making

Open Access•Sarah Hawke, Sarah Hawkes et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 23

Increasing the use of evidence in policy making means strengthening capacity on both the supply and demand sides of evidence production. However, little experience of strengthening the capacity of policy makers in low- and middle- income countries has been published to date. We describe the experiences of five projects (in Bangladesh, Gambia, India and Nigeria), where collaborative teams of researchers and policy makers/policy influencers worked …

Emergent themes included a lack of acceptance by families, the systematic formation of a dependent self-image, and an expectation of limited achievement. Emotional violence was particularly emphasized, as was perceived structural violence stemming from social norms, which led to exclusion and vulnerability. Violence in the natal home …

  • Missing men's messages

Martine Collumbien, Sarah Hawke et al.•ARTICLE•Culture Health & Sexuality•2000

After the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo, the world has seen a shift in paradigm away from focused family planning programs towards reproductive and sexual health more generally. This article illustrates how the traditional emphasis on women's health and family planning can result in men's sexual health needs being overlooked. The rising concern and need for sexually transmitted infection (STI) control progra…
