Assessing health system and service delivery capacity in responding to changing disease patterns in the Philippines
BACKGROUND: The Philippines is experiencing an escalating prevalence of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). As a country with aspirations of achieving universal health coverage, it is imperative to undertake evidence-based health planning to align health service coverage and health resources with the requisite NCD-related health services in each region. This study aimed to address the following questions: (1) in light of the mounting burden of NCDs,…
Perceptual metacognition and self-esteem
Previous studies suggest that individuals with low self-esteem tend to undervalue themselves, a tendency that may reflect a metacognitive monitoring bias, which in turn can be shaped by feedback valence. However, research specifically exploring how self-esteem and feedback valence affect metacognitive monitoring remains scarce. Through three experiments, the study revealed that individuals tend to exhibit an underestimation bias in perceptual met…
Self-care and health seeking for diabetes and hypertension in Cambodia
Cambodia is experiencing a growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) as it undergoes an epidemiological transition. This qualitative study investigates the health-seeking behaviors of Cambodians in the context of hypertension and diabetes, focusing on the utilization of both formal healthcare and alternative medical practices. Data are from 20 in-depth interviews with participants without social health protection and 6 focus groups (n = …
Efficient Removal 17-Estradiol by Graphene-Like Magnetic Sawdust Biochar
The occurrence of environmental endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in aquatic environments has caused extensive concern. Graphene-like magnetic sawdust biochar was synthesized using potassium ferrate (K2FeO4) to make activated sawdust biochar and applied for the removal of 17-estradiol (E2). The characterization showed that the surface morphology of five graphene-like magnetic sawdust biochars prepared with different preparation conditions wer…
Enhancement of Detoxification of Petroleum Hydrocarbons and Heavy Metals in Oil-Contaminated Soil by Using Glycine-β-Cyclodextrin
Soil contamination with petroleum hydrocarbons and heavy metals is a widespread environmental problem. In recent years, cyclodextrin has attracted research interest because of its special hole structure that can form inclusion complexes with certain small molecules. However, the solubility of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) in water is low and it crystallizes easily, leading to its low utilization in practice. In this experiment, we connected β-CD with gly…
Acute Toxicity of Divalent Mercury Ion to Anguilla japonica from Seawater and Freshwater Aquaculture and Its Effects on Tissue Structure
The acute toxicity of divalent mercury ion to Anguilla japonica from seawater and freshwater aquaculture was assessed. In particular, the effects of toxicity on the microstructures of the gill and liver tissues were examined using the hydrostatic method, without feeding, at a water temperature of 20 °C. The median lethal concentrations (LC 50 ) of divalent mercury ion to fishes in seawater and freshwater over various durations were: 24 h = 1.637 …
Design and Preparation of Chitosan-Crosslinked Bismuth Ferrite/Biochar Coupled Magnetic Material for Methylene Blue Removal
Biochar obtained by pyrolysis of the fiber plant kenaf was mixed with bismuth ferrite (BiFeO 3 ) in a chitosan-containing acetic acid solution, magnetized, and modified to prepare a chitosan-crosslinked BiFeO 3 /biochar coupled magnetic material. The adsorption properties of the composite were investigated using methylene blue dissolved in water, and the effects of external conditions, such as pH, methylene blue concentration, reaction time, and …
Improving reproductive health in rural China through participatory planning
China's new health reform initiative aims to provide quality accessible health care to all, including remote rural populations, by 2020. Public health insurance coverage for the rural poor has increased, but rural women have fared worse because of lower status and lack of voice in shaping the services they need. Use of prenatal care, safe delivery and reproductive tract infections (RTIs) services is inadequate and service seeking for health probl…
