Estimating program coverage in the treatment of acute malnutrition using population-based cluster survey methods
Background Despite their utility for program planning, acute malnutrition treatment coverage estimates at the national and sub-national levels are rarely available. Prior work has identified methodological concerns with current approaches. Methods We estimated the point prevalence and treatment coverage of acute malnutrition in 11 districts (or similar subnational areas) across four high-burden countries in Africa using representative cluster-bas…
Age-disparate and intergenerational sex partnerships and HIV
In this Malawi general population survey, age-mixing partnerships were associated with increased odds of HIV among AGYW. These findings highlight inequitable gender norms as a potential focus for HIV prevention and could inform interventions targeting structural, cultural, and social constraints of this key group
“Dragon boating” alone? Community ties and systemic income shocks
Can social capital effectively cushion households against adverse income shocks, especially in the absence of formal insurance mechanisms in developing countries? And what if such shocks are due international finance and thus universal and systemic in nature? We analyse whether participation in formal and informal community activities (our measure of social capital) helped households in Indonesia mitigating the impact of the 1998 financial crisis…
Prevalence of and factors associated with late diagnosis of HIV in Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe
Introduction Late diagnosis of HIV (LD) increases the risk of morbidity, mortality, and HIV transmission. We used nationally representative data from population-based HIV impact assessment (PHIA) surveys in Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe (2015–2016) to characterize adults at risk of LD and to examine associations between LD and presumed HIV transmission to cohabiting sexual partners. Methods We estimated the prevalence of LD, defined as CD4 count R…
Analyzing demand-side efficiency in global health
This article investigates demand-side efficiency in global health-or the efficiency with which health system users convert public health resources into health outcomes. We introduce and explain the concept of demand-side efficiency as well as quantitative methods to empirically estimate it. Using a robust nonparametric form of technical efficiency analysis, we estimate demand side efficiency and its social determinants. We pilot these methods loo…
