  • Identifying pediatric extrapulmonary tuberculosis through an active screening program

Open Access•Giordano Sosa Soto, Jeffrey I Campbell et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2026

We assessed 188 children diagnosed with extrapulmonary tuberculosis in Bangladesh. Over half were aged 10–14 years old. Common symptoms included fever (91.5%), weight loss (88.3%), and decreased appetite (72.9%). Four children died prior to treatment; of 176 children on treatment, 4.0% had unsuccessful outcomes, potentially influenced by age and low weight. Findings highlight the need for improved diagnosis and management in children.

  • Age and sex differences in paediatric tuberculosis care for child contacts

Open Access•Allison Boretsky, Farhana Amanullah et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2026

Background: Childhood tuberculosis (TB) remains difficult to diagnose, even among exposed household contacts. We assessed age- and sex-specific gaps in TB screening, evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment among child contacts in a high-burden setting. Methods: As part of a large active screening program in Kotri, Pakistan, from 2014-2016, children aged 0-14 years with household TB exposure were screened for TB disease. We analysed their progression…

  • Change in influenza vaccine uptake among adults in the United States from May 2020 to October 2024

Open Access•Hannah Melchinger, Sameer M Belgaumi et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

Influenza vaccines are essential against the spread of influenza virus. In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends vaccination to all eligible individuals over 6 months of age; however, uptake remains suboptimal nationally. We do not fully understand the current nuances of influenza vaccine uptake, nor how it has been affected by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. From 2020-2024, we conduc…

  • Change in confidence in public health entities among US adults between 2020–2024

Open Access•Hannah Melchinger, Saad B Omer et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2025

The COVID-19 pandemic introduced significant uncertainty among Americans, and eroded trust in US health entities and institutions. This study describes a longitudinal assessment of Americans’ change in confidence in these public health entities from 2020 to 2024. We conducted four surveys assessing confidence in public health entities among US adults conducted between February 2020 and October 2024. Surveys were hosted by CloudResearch and admini…

  • Age- and sex-specific care cascades to detect gaps in the care of children with tuberculosis in Bangladesh

Open Access•Daniel Ramirez, Amanda Brumwell et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2025

Background: Programmatic interventions to increase the detection of children with tuberculosis (TB) are rarely evaluated to understand age- and sex-specific completion rates. We applied modified TB screening and treatment cascade frameworks to assess indicators of effective implementation by age and sex of a TB screening program for children (zero to 14 years) in Bangladesh. Methods: tests. Results: In total, we screened 552 182 males and 461 419…

  • Barriers and Facilitators to Timely Diagnosis of Tuberculosis in Children and Adolescents in Karachi, Pakistan

Open Access•Sara Siddiqui, Maria Jaswal et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

Interventions that overcome financial barriers and strategies that enhance the capacity of private sector general physicians are necessary to reduce delays in TB diagnosis and treatment initiation for children and adolescents

  • Behavioral interventions for vaccination uptake

    Open Access•Amyn A Malik, Noureen Ahmed et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy•2023

  • Persuasive Covid-19 vaccination campaigns on Facebook and nationwide vaccination coverage in Ukraine, India, and Pakistan

Open Access•Maike Winters, Sarah Christie et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

Social media platforms have a wide and influential reach, and as such provide an opportunity to increase vaccine uptake. To date, there is no large-scale, robust evidence on the offline effects of online messaging campaigns. We aimed to test whether pre-tested, persuasive messaging campaigns from UNICEF, disseminated on Facebook, influenced COVID-19 vaccine uptake in Ukraine, India, and Pakistan. In Ukraine, we deployed a stepped-wedge randomized…

  • Covid-19 vaccine acceptance and hesitancy in low- and middle-income countries

    Open Access•Julio S Solís Arce, Shana S Warren et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Medicine•2021

Widespread acceptance of COVID-19 vaccines is crucial for achieving sufficient immunization coverage to end the global pandemic, yet few studies have investigated COVID-19 vaccination attitudes in lower-income countries, where large-scale vaccination is just beginning. We analyze COVID-19 vaccine acceptance across 15 survey samples covering 10 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in Asia, Africa and South America, Russia (an upper-middle-inco…

  • Predictors of unsuccessful tuberculosis treatment outcomes in children from a prospective cohort study in Pakistan

    Open Access•Meredith B Brooks, Amyn A Malik et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2021

BACKGROUND: Every year, about 239 000 children die from tuberculosis (TB), despite availability of highly effective regimens. Few studies have evaluated predictors for poor treatment outcomes in children treated for TB. METHODS: We assessed predictors of unsuccessful TB treatment outcomes in a prospective cohort of children diagnosed by an intensified TB patient-finding intervention at four facilities in Pakistan between 2014 and 2016. A case of …

  • Determinants of Covid-19 vaccine acceptance in the US

    Open Access•Amyn A Malik, SarahAnn M McFadden et al.•ARTICLE•EClinicalMedicine•2020

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic continues to adversely affect the U.S., which leads globally in total cases and deaths. As COVID-19 vaccines are under development, public health officials and policymakers need to create strategic vaccine-acceptance messaging to effectively control the pandemic and prevent thousands of additional deaths. METHODS: Using an online platform, we surveyed the U.S. adult population in May 2020 to understand risk perce…

  • Tuberculosis control and care in the era of Covid-19

    Open Access•Amyn A Malik, Nauman Safdar et al.•ARTICLE•Health Policy and Planning•2020•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 9

Tuberculosis (TB) is the leading infectious cause of mortality globally, with almost 4000 daily deaths. The treatment coverage and success rate are ongoing challenges for low- and middle-income countries (WHO, 2019). To effectively control the TB epidemic and meet the EndTB goals, the Zero TB Initiative was launched in October 2015. It aims to create ‘islands of TB elimination’ using a comprehensive approach of search, treat and prevent. Unfortun…
