HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Uptake and Persistence in Wartime Ukraine
Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the ongoing war have had devastating effects on health programs. This observational study assessed uptake and persistent use of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) during wartime. The study included newly-initiating daily PrEP users from 94 clinics who enrolled on PrEP from October 2022 through September 2023. PrEP persistence was defined as returning for a PrEP refill no later than 7 days after the expected refil…
Building consensus on common features and interoperability use cases for community health information systems
INTRODUCTION: Information systems for community health have become increasingly sophisticated and evidence-based in the last decade and they are now the most widely used health information systems in many low-income and middle-income countries. This study aimed to establish consensus regarding key features and interoperability priorities for community health information systems (CHISs). METHODS: A Delphi study was conducted among a systematically…
Impact of war on HIV-related healthcare services and health workers in eastern Ukraine
The 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine has caused serious challenges for healthcare workers (HCWs) and HIV-related healthcare services. This study assessed the effects of the invasion on HCWs wellbeing and on continuity of HIV services, using in-depth interviews with HCWs from facilities offering HIV antiretroviral therapy (ART) and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) services in the Donetsk region of Eastern Ukraine. A directed content analysis, with …
An EMR-based alert with brief provider-led ART adherence counseling in Haiti
We examined the secondary effects of an antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence intervention on information, motivation, and behavioral skills (IMB) and patient-provider communication (PPC). Data were from a sample of 116 patients enrolled in a quasi-experimental mixed-methods study at two large ART clinics in Haiti. We examined changes in IMB and PPC scores after the intervention and the association between baseline PPC and endline IMB.The interv…
Turning the tide on female genital mutilation in a high prevalence country
Sudan has about 87% of females aged 15–49 years living with female genital mutilation (FGM), mostly performed by midwives (64%). In 2016, the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) adopted the WHO’s global strategy to stop healthcare providers from performing FGM. Our review of activity reports from 2016 to 2018 found the format of activities (N=95) was mainly meetings (58%) and trainings (31%) with median costs of US$10 645 and US$14 964, respectivel…
Short-Term Effects of the Covid-19 Pandemic on HIV Care Utilization, Service Delivery, and Continuity of HIV Antiretroviral Treatment (ART) in Haiti
Patient-Reported Treatment Satisfaction and Quality of Life Among People Living with HIV Following the Introduction of Dolutegravir-Based ART Regimens in Ukraine
Timely initiation of HIV antiretroviral therapy in Haiti 2004 2018
Objective. To describe trends in timing of ART initiation for newly diagnosed people living with HIV before and after Haiti adopted its Test and Start policy for universal HIV antiretroviral therapy (ART) in July 2016, and to explore predictors of timely ART initiation for both newly and previously diagnosed people living with HIV following Test and Start adoption. Methods. This retrospective cohort study explored timing of ART initiation among 1…
An EMR-Based Alert with Brief Provider-Led ART Adherence Counseling
Success factors for implementing and sustaining a mature electronic medical record in a low-resource setting
Electronic health information systems, including electronic medical records (EMRs), have the potential to improve access to information and quality of care, among other things. Success factors and challenges for novel EMR implementations in low-resource settings have increasingly been studied, although less is known about maturing systems and sustainability. One systematic review identified seven categories of implementation success factors: ethi…
Attrition from antiretroviral treatment services among pregnant and non-pregnant patients following adoption of Option B+ in Haiti
BACKGROUND: Access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) has expanded in Haiti because of the adoption of Option B+ and the revision of treatment guidelines. Retention in care and treatment varies greatly and few studies have examined retention rates, particularly among women enrolled in Option B+. OBJECTIVE: To assess attrition among pregnant and non-pregnant patients initiating ART following adoption of Option B+ in Haiti. METHODS: Longitudinal data …
Before and after the earthquake
BACKGROUND: On January 12, 2010, a devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the West Department of Haiti, killing more than 200,000 people and injuring or displacing many more. This disaster threatened continuity of HIV care and treatment services. OBJECTIVES: This case study examined the effect of the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti on attrition from the HIV antiretroviral therapy (ART) program. DESIGN: The study triangulated retrospecti…
