Climate and health
Leveraging the co-benefits of investments in health and climate can be best achieved by moving away from isolated financing approaches and adopting co-financing strategies, which aim to improve the outcomes of both sectors. We propose a framework for studying co-financing for health and climate that considers the degree of integration between sector funding, and whether arrangements are ‘passive’, when cross-sectoral goals are indirectly affected…
Scoping reviews
Scoping reviews are an increasingly common approach to evidence synthesis with a growing suite of methodological guidance and resources to assist review authors with their planning, conduct and reporting. The latest guidance for scoping reviews includes the JBI methodology and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses—Extension for Scoping Reviews. This paper provides readers with a brief update regarding ongoing work…
Applying GRADE-Cerqual to qualitative evidence synthesis findings
The GRADE-CERQual ('Confidence in the Evidence from Reviews of Qualitative research') approach provides guidance for assessing how much confidence to place in findings from systematic reviews of qualitative research (or qualitative evidence syntheses). The approach has been developed to support the use of findings from qualitative evidence syntheses in decision-making, including guideline development and policy formulation. Confidence in the evid…
Embedding research in health policy and systems in the Americas
As countries develop and improve universal health coverage schemes globally, there is increasing recognition that health policymaking and health system strengthening need to be informed by robust research evidence (1, 2). In Latin America and the Caribbean, emerging and complex health challenges require actionable and context-sensitive evidence to improve the responsiveness of health systems (3). This movement towards evidence-informed policymaki…
Effect of a policy to reduce user fees on the rate of skilled birth attendance across socioeconomic strata in Burkina Faso
BACKGROUND: In Sub-Saharan Africa, maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality rates are associated with underutilization of skilled birth attendance (SBA). In 2007, Burkina Faso introduced a subsidy scheme for SBA fees. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of Burkina Faso's subsidy policy on SBA rate across socioeconomic status (SES) strata. METHODS: We used a quasi-experimental design. The data sources were two representativ…
Towards a Better Integration of Global Health and Biodiversity in the New Sustainable Development Goals Beyond Rio+20
Heavy burden of non-communicable diseases at early age and gender disparities in an adult population of Burkina Faso
Our work suggests that social inequality extends into the distribution of non-communicable diseases among social groups and supports the thesis of a differential vulnerability in Burkinabè women. It raises the possibility of an abnormally high rate of premature morbidity that could manifest as a form of premature aging in the adult population. Increased prevention, screening and treatment are needed in Burkina Faso to address high prevalence and …
