  • The Sangha River Interval, Its Earliest Village Settlements, and the Bantu-Speakers’ Expansion During the Late Holocene (Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo Republic)

  • Late Holocene forest contraction and fragmentation in central Africa

Open Access•Jean Maley, Charles Doumenge et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2018

During the warmer Holocene Period, two major climatic crises affected the Central African rainforests. The first crisis, around 4000 cal yr BP, caused the contraction of the forest in favor of savanna expansion at its northern and southern periphery. The second crisis, around 2500 cal yr BP, resulted in major perturbation at the forest core, leading to forest disturbance and fragmentation with a rapid expansion of pioneer-type vegetation, and a m…

  • Coupled Rock-Eval pyrolysis and spectrophotometry for lacustrine sedimentary dynamics

    Open Access•David Sebag, Maxime Debret et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 3

In recent years, Nguène Lake and Kamalété Lake (Gabon, West Central Africa) have been studied repeatedly, providing comprehensive reconstructions of environmental changes over the last millennia. Both lakes are in different geomorphological and environmental settings. They are therefore excellent sites to test new methodological approaches. Indeed, the sedimentary cores provide various facies, and the previous studies provide references for calib…

  • Étude paléoenvironnementale des sédiments quaternaires du Guelb er Richât (Adrar de Mauritanie) en regard des sites voisins ou associés du Paléolithique inférieur. Discussion et perspectives

Open Access•Pierre Giresse, Ousmane Sao et al.•ARTICLE•L Anthropologie•2012

  • The Holocene sedimentary and pyroclastic accumulations of two crater lakes (Mbalang,Tizong) of the volcanic plateau of Adamawa (Cameroon)

    Open Access•Simon Ngos, Pierre Giresse•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2011•References: 3

This paper presents the results from field observations, geochemical and mineralogical analyses, radiocarbon dating and magnetic susceptibility of the Holocene sediments of two crater lakes, Mbalang and Tizong, located within the woody savanna of the Adamawa Plateau (Cameroon). In the Mbalang core (M4) with an age of 7318 cal. BP at the base, the first 2000 years record indicates a relatively wet climate deduced from the recurrence of quartz-rich…

  • Coastal evolution in Senegal and Mauritania at 103, 102 and 101-year scales

Open Access•J Paul Barusseau, Mariline Bâ et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•1995

  • A petrological and geochemical study of the calcareous sandstone of West African marine Pleistocene (Cap des Biches, Senegal)

Open Access•Bachir Diouf, Pierre Giresse et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•1995

  • Quaternary sedimentary deposits on the Cameroon shelf

    Open Access•Pierre Giresse, Jean-Claude Aloisi et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•1995

  • Historical environmental changes at phalasarna harbor, West Crete

    Open Access•Paolo A Pirazzoli, Josiane Ausseil-Badie et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•1992•Cited by: 8•References: 2

The ongoing archaeological excavations that started in 1986 on the site of the harbor of Phalasarna have confirmed that the ancient port described as a closed harbor by ancient geographers is, due to the regional uplift of west Crete, now situated on dry land, about 6.6 m above sea level. In this paper, after summarizing the geological background, the main historical sources and recent archaeological results, new stratigraphical data obtained fro…

  • Holocene deltaic sequence in the Saloum estuary, Senegal

    Open Access•Josiane Ausseil-Badie, Jean-Paul Barusseau et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1991

The 2250 km 2 Saloum delta, south of Dakar, Senegal, consists of a Holocene sedimentary sequence deposited during five evolutionary stages: submerged postglacial ria, funnel-like estuary, barred estuary, cuspate delta, and reverse estuary. The passage from one stage to another was marked by the deposition of sedimentary units consisting of shelly sands, silty or sandy clays, and an extensive thick green mud. Muds in the lower strata, dating betwe…

  • Contribution de l'étude exoscopique des quartz à la reconstitution paléogéographique des derniers épisodes du Quaternaire littoral du Congo

    Open Access•Pierre Giresse, Loïc le Ribault•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1981

The paleogeographic and particularly palaeoclimatic evolution in the Congo at the end of the Quatemary has been investigated thoroughly with a study of grain surfaces using the scanning electron microscope. The succession of distinct physicochemical environment marks is characterized with the help of other methods (radiocarbon, micropaleontology). During a still-existing tropical climate, arid periods are contemporaneous with regressive phases (e…
