Assessing metrics for evaluating the maternal continuum of care in Ethiopia
Despite Ethiopia’s remarkable progress in reducing maternal mortality between 2000 and 2023, more effort is needed to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target. The government outlined a continuum of care framework for reproductive, maternal, and child healthcare service delivery to positively impact maternal health outcomes. Therefore, it is important to measure and monitor progress in improving women’s access to the continuum of car…
Use of explainable machine learning in risk classification of Cesarean section delivery
Cesarean section (CS) delivery is an important surgical intervention for reducing maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality when medically indicated; however, substantial inequalities in its utilization persist across Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This study evaluated the performance of explainable machine learning (ML) algorithms in classifying cesarean section delivery patterns using Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data from ten SSA countri…
Exploring gender-intentional implementation of Digital Health Information for Immunization in Ethiopia
Despite growing investment in digital health for immunization, there is limited evidence on how gender is considered into design and implementation. In 2022, Ethiopia launched a Gender-intentional Digital Health Information Roadmap with the support of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance; however, the operationalization of gender strategies remains unclear. This qualitative study explored gender inclusiveness in digital health for immunization in Ethiopia,…
Predicting home delivery and identifying its determinants among women aged 15–49 years in sub-Saharan African countries using a Demographic and Health Surveys 2016–2023
The random forest machine learning model provides greater predictive power for estimating home delivery risk factors. To reduce the prevalence of home delivery, this finding recommends to emphasis on improving antenatal care services, education, and awareness about health facility delivery
Enhancing the antenatal care quality through incentivized routine health information system in Northwestern Ethiopia
PBNI significantly enhances ANC quality but lacks statistical significance for optimal utilization. PBNI can motivate providers and enhance service quality when integrated with RHIS-strengthening efforts; however, longer implementation and complementary demand-side strategies may be necessary for sustained optimal ANC improvements
Perceived Impact of Covid-19 and Strategies for effective Implementation of Maternal and Child Health Care Services in Ethiopia
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused an abrupt reduction in the use of in-person health care. Children and women of reproductive age groups might be disproportionately affected by the disruption of routine health services, particularly in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). The aim of this study was to see the potential effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on maternal and child health (MCH) care service utilization and strategies for effective servi…
Digital literacy level and associated factors among health professionals in a referral and teaching hospital
Background: In Ethiopia and other developing countries, electronic medical record systems and other health information technology are being introduced. However, a small proportion of low-income countries have successfully implemented national health information systems. One cause for this can be the lack of digital literacy among medical practitioners. As a result, this study aimed to assess health professionals' digital literacy level and associ…
Completion of the Continuum of Maternity Care in the Emerging Regions of Ethiopia
Maternal mortality in Ethiopia was estimated to be 267 per 100,000 live births in 2020. A significant number of maternal deaths occur in the emerging regions of the country: Afar, Somali, Gambela, and Benishangul-Gumuz. Achieving the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target requires a dramatic increase in maternal healthcare utilisation during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Yet, there is a paucity of evidence on the continuum …
Timely completion of vaccination and its determinants among children in northwest, Ethiopia
In this study, untimely vaccination was found to be high. Different individual and contextual factors were found to be associated with on-time full vaccination. Therefore, tailored strategies have to be designed and implemented to address people and the communities where they live. Moreover, timeliness of vaccination should be considered as important indicator of the immunization program performance in Ethiopia
Capacity, committed funding and co-production—institutionalizing implementation research in low- and middle-income countries
Global, regional, and national age-sex-specific mortality and life expectancy, 1950–2017
BACKGROUND: Assessments of age-specific mortality and life expectancy have been done by the UN Population Division, Department of Economics and Social Affairs (UNPOP), the United States Census Bureau, WHO, and as part of previous iterations of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD). Previous iterations of the GBD used population estimates from UNPOP, which were not derived in a way that was internally consistent wit…
Global, regional, and national age-sex-specific mortality for 282 causes of death in 195 countries and territories, 1980–2017
BACKGROUND: Global development goals increasingly rely on country-specific estimates for benchmarking a nation's progress. To meet this need, the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2016 estimated global, regional, national, and, for selected locations, subnational cause-specific mortality beginning in the year 1980. Here we report an update to that study, making use of newly available data and improved methods. GBD …
Global, regional, and national comparative risk assessment of 84 behavioural, environmental and occupational, and metabolic risks or clusters of risks for 195 countries and territories, 1990–2017
BackgroundThe Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2017 comparative risk assessment (CRA) is a comprehensive approach to risk factor quantification that offers a useful tool for synthesising evidence on risks and risk–outcome associations. With each annual GBD study, we update the GBD CRA to incorporate improved methods, new risks and risk–outcome pairs, and new data on risk exposure levels and risk–outcome associatio…
Global, regional, and national disability-adjusted life-years (Dalys) for 359 diseases and injuries and healthy life expectancy (Hale) for 195 countries and territories, 1990–2017
BACKGROUND: How long one lives, how many years of life are spent in good and poor health, and how the population's state of health and leading causes of disability change over time all have implications for policy, planning, and provision of services. We comparatively assessed the patterns and trends of healthy life expectancy (HALE), which quantifies the number of years of life expected to be lived in good health, and the complementary measure o…
Measuring progress from 1990 to 2017 and projecting attainment to 2030 of the health-related Sustainable Development Goals for 195 countries and territories
BACKGROUND: Efforts to establish the 2015 baseline and monitor early implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) highlight both great potential for and threats to improving health by 2030. To fully deliver on the SDG aim of "leaving no one behind", it is increasingly important to examine the health-related SDGs beyond national-level estimates. As part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 (GBD 2…
Global, regional, and national incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability for 354 diseases and injuries for 195 countries and territories, 1990–2017
BACKGROUND: The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2017 (GBD 2017) includes a comprehensive assessment of incidence, prevalence, and years lived with disability (YLDs) for 354 causes in 195 countries and territories from 1990 to 2017. Previous GBD studies have shown how the decline of mortality rates from 1990 to 2016 has led to an increase in life expectancy, an ageing global population, and an expansion of the non-fatal…
