  • What kind of hominin first left Africa

    Open Access•Giancarlo Scardia, W Neves et al.•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Anthropology Issues…•2021

Recent discoveries of stone tools from Jordan (2.5 Ma) and China (2.1 Ma) document hominin presence in Asia at the beginning of the Pleistocene, well before the conventional Dmanisi datum at 1.8 Ma. Although no fossil hominins documenting this earliest Out of Africa phase have been found, on chronological grounds a pre‐ Homo erectus hominin must be considered the most likely maker of those artifacts. If so, this sheds new light on at least two di…

  • Lagoa do Quari (São Raimundo Nonato, Piauí)

Open Access•Fabio Parenti, Giulia Aimola et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 32

Northeastern Brazil has thousands of wetland fossiliferous deposits with megafauna and, in some cases, associated lithic artifacts. The timing of the arrival of humans in South America and the extinction of megafauna is still debated and these sites contribute both to this discussion and to the reconstruction of the Late Pleistocene and Holocene paleoenvironment. Lagoa do Quari, 40 km south of São Raimundo Nonato, Piauí state, is a marsh deposit …

  • Magnetostratigraphic and chronostratigraphic constraints on the Marathousa 1 Lower Palaeolithic site and the Middle Pleistocene deposits of the Megalopolis basin, Greece

Open Access•Vangelis Tourloukis, Giovanni Muttoni et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2018

We investigated the magnetostratigraphy of the Megalopolis basin in central Peloponnese, Greece, which encompasses a record of Pleistocene lacustrine and lignite-bearing sedimentation, where lithic tools stratigraphically associated with remnants of an almost complete skeleton of Palaeoloxodon antiquus were recently found at the Marathousa 1 site. A magnetic polarity reversal was observed within a ∼10 m-thick lignite seam at the base of the (expo…

  • Insights on the opening of the Galerian mammal migration pathway from magnetostratigraphy of the Pleistocene marine-continental transition in the Arda River section (northern Italy)

Open Access•Edoardo Monesi, Giovanni Muttoni et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2016

We investigated the magnetostratigraphy of the Arda River section (northern Italy) where the transition from marine to continental sedimentation occurring in the Po River basin during the Pleistocene is registered. Four magnetic polarity reversals were used to construct an age model of sedimentation aided by marine biostratigraphy and tied to a standard δ 18 O curve from the literature. The section spans from the Olduvai subchron (1.94-1.78 Ma) a…

  • Age of Mammuthus trogontherii from Kostolac, Serbia, and the entry of megaherbivores into Europe during the Late Matuyama climate revolution

Open Access•Giovanni Muttoni, Giancarlo Scardia et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2015

At the Drmno open-pit coal mine near Kostolac in Serbia, a nearly complete skeleton of Mammuthus trogontherii (nicknamed Vika) was discovered in a fluvial deposit overlain by a loess–paleosol sequence where a second paleontological level named Nosak with remains of M. trogontherii was found. We studied the magnetostratigraphy of the Kostolac sedimentary sequence and found that the Vika layer dates to ~ 0.8 Ma, shortly before the Brunhes–Matuyama …

  • Bottleneck at Jaramillo for human migration to Iberia and the rest of Europe

    Open Access•Giovanni Muttoni, Dale V Kent et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2015•Cited by: 6•References: 30

  • A critique of evidence for human occupation of Europe older than the Jaramillo subchron (∼1 Ma)

Giovanni Muttoni, Giancarlo Scardia et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Evolution•2013

  • The site of Coste San Giacomo (Early Pleistocene, central Italy)

Open Access•Luca Bellucci, Ilaria Mazzini et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2012

  • New stratigraphic and chronologic data on the Early–Middle Pleistocene Alpine glaciations in the Po Plain (Northern Italy)

    Open Access•Giancarlo Scardia•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2012

  • Nouvelles recherches dans le bassin Plio-Pléistocène d’Anagni (Latium méridional, Italie)
