  • The history of family and community life through the study of civil registers

Vasilis Gavalas, VASILIS S GAVALAS•ARTICLE•The History of the Family•2013•Cited by: 1

A plenitude of information can be shed on family history and community life by studying civil registers. The case study here is the island of Paros in the period 1894–1997. This period of one century saw the transformation of the insular rural society to one dominated by the third-sector economy and the passage from illiteracy to total literacy. These structural socio-economic changes influenced the timing at which people were procreating, marryi…

    Open Access•Vasilis Gavalas, VASILIS S GAVALAS et al.•ARTICLE•International Migration•2012•References: 2

Our purpose in undertaking this research is to methodically map the labour market circumstances of the main immigrant groups in Greece. We classify all of the Districts of Greece into three categories (Diverse, Mixed and Unmixed) according to the ethnic composition of each District. We measure how the employment status of the immigrants varies (1) according to the ethnic group and sex of the immigrant, and (2) according to the ethnic composition …

For this purpose the method of family reconstitution has been applied to two towns on the island. Official population statistics have been used to derive basic mortality estimates for the Cyclades and Greece as a whole. Reference to other studies concerning island mortality is also made. Hen…

  • Marriage patterns in Greece during the twentieth century

    Open Access•Vasilis Gavalas, VASILIS S GAVALAS•ARTICLE•Continuity and Change•2008•Cited by: 1

Typologies of marriage patterns in early modern Europe have been formulated by John Hajnal and Peter Laslett. However, demographic and anthropological studies have noticed that marriage patterns in the Balkan area have exhibited such great variability that it is difficult to classify them in any of the categories proposed by Laslett. This article examines the marriage patterns in Greece and some of her island populations in the time-span of the t…

  • Family Formation and Dissolution in an Aegean Island

    Open Access•Vasilis Gavalas, VASILIS S GAVALAS•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2005

This paper explores family formation and dissolution in the Aegean island of Paros over the period 1894–1998. The examined issues are: trends in age at marriage, age gap between spouses, age differentials among different occupational groups, age at widowhood, remarriage, illegitimacy and bridal pregnancy. The main findings confirmed that certain characteristics of the ‘Mediterranean’ marriage pattern, such as low age at marriage for females, high…

  • Fertility transition on a Greek island

    Open Access•Vasilis Gavalas, VASILIS S GAVALAS•ARTICLE•Continuity and Change•2002•Cited by: 1

This article explores marital fertility on the Aegean island of Paros based on family-reconstitution data from one main town and one village on the island, namely Naoussa and Kostos. By probing the reproductive behaviour of couples who married between 1894 and 1953 it was found that fertility was still ‘natural’ on the island at the beginning of the twentieth century, while a substantial fertility decline made itself visible only in the late 1920…
