  • A key site for inferring the timing of dispersal of giant deer in Sardinia, the Su Fossu de Cannas cave, Sadali, Italy

Open Access•Rita T Melis, Maria Rita Palombo et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2016

Su Fossu de Cannas (SFC) cave is one of several known cavities in the Sadali plateau in Sardinia, Italy. The evolution of the cave is the result of complex erosional and deposital processes that occurred during the Neogene and Quaternary. A fossiliferous cemented conglomerate, containing various deer remains, now forms the ceiling of a cavity (tunnel). The faunal remains belong to a large cervid, which show some morphological affinity with large …

  • MIS 5e at San Giovanni di Sinis (Sardinia, Italy): Stratigraphy, U/Th dating and “eustatic” inferences

Open Access•Salvatore Carboni, Luciano Lecca et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2014

The most representative Late Pleistocene (“Tyrrhenian”) outcrop in Sardinia (San Giovanni di Sinis) was re-visited based on detailed sedimentological and stratigraphical analysis supported by U-series dating of fossil corals. The stratigraphy shows shoreface–backshore sandstones overlying an erosional surface cut on vertebrate-bearing layers. Facies analysis and sequence-stratigraphic approaches suggest “eustatic” changes during the overall depos…

  • Timing of advance and basal condition of the Laurentide Ice Sheet during the last glacial maximum in the Richardson Mountains, NWT

Open Access•Denyse Lacelle, Bernard Lauriol et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2013

This study presents new ages for the northwest section of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) glacial chronology from material recovered from two retrogressive thaw slumps exposed in the Richardson Mountains, Northwest Territories, Canada. One study site, located at the maximum glacial limit of the LIS in the Richardson Mountains, had calcite concretions recovered from aufeis buried by glacial till that were dated by U/Th disequilibrium to 18,500 cal …

  • Pb chronology and trace metal geochemistry at Los Tuxtlas, Mexico, as evidenced by a sedimentary record from the Lago Verde crater lake

    Open Access•Ana Carolina Ruiz-Fernández, Claude Hillaire-Marcel et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2007

Lago Verde is a fresh-water maar found on the lower slopes of San Martin volcano, at the Sierra de Los Tuxtlas, Mexico, currently the northernmost remnant of the tropical rain forest in America. 210 Pb and 137 Cs analyzed in a sediment core were used to reconstruct the historical fluxes of Ag, Cd, Cu, Pb, Hg and Zn to the site during the last ∼ 150 yr. The 210 Pb xs -derived sediment accumulation rates, the magnetic susceptibility, C/N ratios and…

  • Late Wisconsinan Port Eliza Cave deposits and their implications for human coastal migration, Vancouver Island, Canada

    Open Access•M Al‐Suwaidi, Brent Ward et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2006•Cited by: 1•References: 14

Sediments of Port Eliza Cave provide a record of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) on Vancouver Island that has important implications for human migration along the debated coastal migration route. Lithofacies changes from nonglacial diamict to glacial laminated silt and clay and till, then a return to nonglacial conditions with oxidized clay, colluvial block beds, and speleothems, along with radiocarbon and U/Th dates, define glacial–nonglacial tra…

A first set of speleothems (stalagmites and flow stone s) from the Chauvet Cave (Ardèche, southern France) were dated using U/Th and 14C mass spectrométrie methods. At the same time, stable isotope analyses (δ13C and δ18O) were done on several stalagmites and on seepage water and rainfall (δ18O and δD). These results give the following information: firstly, accurate ages of several geomorphological events that have marked the cave's history since…

  • U-Series Dating by the Tims Technique of Land Snails from Paleosols in the Canary Islands

    Open Access•Claude Hillaire-Marcel, Claude Hillaire‐Marcel et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1995

A sequence of seven superimposed paleosols developed on eolian calcarenites and alluvium was sampled on the island of Lanzarote in order to examine the possibility of dating land snail shells by the U-series method, using a TIMS technique allowing measurement of U and Th isotopes in very small samples. In the lower six units, the fossil shells yielded D-allo/L-isoleucine (A/I) ratios of about 0.5 and apparent AMS 14 C ages ranging from 41,000 to …
