  • Comparing Inverse, Polar, and Rectangle-Wedge-Tail Fortran Routines for Pseudo-Random Normal Number Generation

    Open Access•Michael Dolker, Silas Halperin•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1982

A FORTRAN IV version of the Marsaglia rectangle-wedge-tail algorithm and IMSL's commercially available Box-Muller polar method of normal deviate pseudo-random number generation were combined with various linear congruential uniform pseudo-random number generations and tested on a 32-bit-word IBM 370/155 computer. Looking at their relative speed and degree of meeting normality as joint performance criteria placed Marsaglia's method very slightly a…

  • Segmented Trend Analysis for Stimulus Generalization Studies

    Open Access•Silas Halperin•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1978

An analysis of variance model is recommended for data which display a peaked trend. This type of data is particularly common in psychological studies of stimulus generalization. The model consists of quadradic polynomial segments which are constrained to meet in a peak at a predetermined value of the quantitative independent variable. A variety of hypotheses are suggested and the testing of these hypotheses is illustrated with some data contrived…

  • The Incorrect Measurement of Components

    Open Access•Silas Halperin•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1976

Component analysis provides an attractive alternative to factor analysis, since component scores are easily determined while factor scores can only be estimated. Although the literature contains methods of finding component scores, intuitively reasonable but incorrect methods are commonly used to calculate component scores. This paper presents not only the correct method of determining component scores but, more importantly, also presents several…

  • A Computer Program to Test a Repeated Measures Hypothesis Using Hotelling's One-Sample T2 Statistic

    Open Access•Peter P Vitaliano, Silas Halperin•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1975

The extent and direction of bias in an approximate test ( T A 2 ) of a one-way repeated measures hypothesis was studied. Monte Carlo methods were used to simulate nine multinormal parent populations. Five thousand samples were drawn from each population and an F statistic (transformed from T A 2 ) was calculated for each sample. Nine sampling distributions, each containing 5,000 Fs, were then observed. T A 2 was shown to be very conservative—the …

  • A Computer Program for Estimating the Power of Tests of Assumptions of Markov Chains

    Open Access•Robert W Lissitz, Silas Halperin•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1971

  • A Third Comment on Homogeniety of Regression

    Silas Halperin•ARTICLE•American Educational Research…•1971•References: 2

Let me discuss Dr. Geeslin's comments in the order in which he presents them. First, Dr. Geeslin finds in my comment an implication that a test statistic for homogeneity of regression is impossible to calculate. Nowhere in my comment have I been able to locate such an implication, nor did I mean to communicate such an idea. My comments were directed to the notational and conceptual errors in the original paper. Any standard multiple regression pr…
