  • Excavations in the legionary fortress of Brigetio in 2025

Open Access•Dávid Bartus, Melinda Szabó et al.•ARTICLE•Dissertationes Archaeologicae•2026

Research of the legionary camp at Brigetio began in 2015. Over the past 10 years, excavations have extended to the principia, a Late Roman apsidal basilica-type building, and the military bathhouse. During the 2025 season, a surface area of 7,100 m2 was excavated. The surfaces were situated relatively far from one another, functioning as test trenches across the praetentura. Ground-penetrating radar surveys had revealed the locations of several b…

  • Roman Bronze Figurines Depicting Iuppiter from Brigetio

    Open Access•Dávid Bartus•ARTICLE•Dissertationes Archaeologicae•2026

This study examines eight bronze figurines depicting Iuppiter found in Brigetio. The examples presented in this paper clearly demonstrate the pivotal role Brigetio played as a centre of Roman bronze sculpture in the region. Although Iuppiter appears most frequently in Pannonian epigraphic record, his representation in bronze sculpture is relatively rare. This contrast reflects the distinction between the public and private aspects of his cult. Bo…

  • Preliminary report on the excavations of the legionary bath of Brigetio in 2024

Open Access•Dávid Bartus, Melinda Szabó et al.•ARTICLE•Dissertationes Archaeologicae•2025

The excavation of the legionary camp at Brigetio began in 2021. Throughout the last four campaigns, 2,200 square meters of the baths were unearthed, which span a total of well over 6,000 square meters. In 2024 the work continued across four surfaces. The excavations here shed a light on the size of the bath, which extended westward over a much larger area than previous excavations and radar surveys had suggested. In connection with the heating sy…

The death of the Emperor Valentinian I on the 17th of November 375, marked one of the most significant events in the Late Roman history of Pannonia. Since 2015, excavations have been carried out in different parts of the legionary fortress in Brigetio. Due to the systematic geophysical surveys of the praetentura, a large building complex came to light, which could be identified as the bath of the fortress, even before the fieldworks started in the territory. In the area of this building complex, the excavations started in 2021, and continued in the next two years. Now, an approximately 1800 m…

Over the past few years, systematic excavations took place in the praetentura, based on results of the geophysical surveys. A large bui…
