  • A korai keresztény temetkezési szokások kialakulásáról

    Open Access•Ádám Bollók•ARTICLE•Archaeologiai Értesítő•2024•References: 2

Absztrakt A tanulmány a korai keresztény temetkezési szokásrendszerek kialakulásának néhány főbb kérdését vizsgálja a késő ókor évszázadait és a kelet-mediterrán térséget a középpontba állítva.

  • Lamps and Lighting Devices in Late Antique Funerary Liturgies of the Levantine Provinces of the Later Roman Empire

    Ádám Bollók, Ayelet Dayan•ARTICLE•Liber Annuus•2023

Pottery lamps are frequent occurrences in late antique Levantine mortuary assemblages. This holds particularly true for communal tombs, in which their numbers can sometimes reach up to a few hundred pieces in a single burial space. The present paper distinguishes four major locations where lamps were generally deposited in these mortuary contexts: 1) the outer entrance areas of tombs, including the steps descending to tomb doors, 2) small niches …

  • Tracing the road of elephant ivory at the end of Late Antiquity – Archaeometric analysis of ivory artefacts from the 6th–7th-century Carpathian Basin

Open Access•Bernadett Bajnóczi, István Koncz et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Archaeologica Academiae…•2023

Elephant ivory, a prestigious and valuable raw material in the post-Roman West and Byzantium between the 5th and 7th centuries AD, may originate from various sources. While both written and art historical evidence suggests that in the case of early medieval artefacts, African provenance is more likely than Asian, no data at hand is conclusive. The present paper investigates, with the help of FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, carbon and nitrogen concen…

  • Late antique Mediterranean rotary keys from Avaria

    Open Access•Ádám Bollók•ARTICLE•Acta Archaeologica Academiae…•2023

The present paper describes and discusses a group of iron and copper-alloy rotary keys characterised by a moveable joint connecting the shaft and the key-ring, appearing in the seventh-century material record of the Carpathian Basin whose origins can be sought in the Mediterranean. While the few published examples of the class were in previous studies mainly regarded as Roman-period artefacts secondarily re-used as amulets by the Avar-period popu…

  • Christian burials in Western Galilee and the emergence of christian local mortuary traditions in Late Antiquity

    Open Access•Ádám Bollók, Ayelet Dayan•ARTICLE•Hungarian Archaeology•2022

The goal of the research project described and discussed here is the meticulous assessment of the tombs and cemetery sections investigated in two geographically fairly restricted regions: Western Galilee and the broader area of Caesarea Philippi, both lying in the former Late Roman province of Phoenicia. With the generous support of the Israel Antiquities Authority, we were granted access to several mortuary assemblages that have remained unpubli…

Described and discussed in the present paper are eight belt buckles and belt ornaments as well as a possible die of the later 6th to 7th centuries and the Early Islamic period discovered at Shivta. Four of them belong to the large family of Byzantine openwork belt accessories of the later 6th and early 7th centuries, four date from the earlier 7th century, while one piece can be assigned to the Umayyad or early ‘Abbāsid period. In addition to the…

  • Sixth- and Seventh-Century Elephant Ivory Finds from the Carpathian Basin

    Open Access•Ádám Bollók, István Koncz•ARTICLE•Archaeologiai Értesítő•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 17

Jelen tanulmány célja az elefántcsont mint nyersanyag lehetséges forrásaira és értékére vonatkozó, a római és a késő ókori mediterrán világból származó adatok áttekintése, információkat nyerve ezáltal a 6–7. századi Kárpát-medence régészeti hagyatékából előkerült elefántcsonttárgyak eredetére, elérhetőségére és árára vonatkozólag. A hellenisztikus kortól a kora középkorig terjedő időszakban a Földközi-tenger vidéki elefántcsont-kereskedelem dinam…

  • Kép és képnélküliség a kárpát-medencében A 6–10. Században

    Ádám Bollók•ARTICLE•Archaeologiai Értesítő•2013•References: 1

t\t\t\tThe study analyses a peculiar feature of the archaeological material known from the 6th-10th-century Carpathian Basin, i.e. the mostly aniconic nature of the visual arts during the Avar and Hungarian Conquest periods. The author attempts to explain the generally rare appearance of human depictions and anthropomorphic ornaments. Thus he seeks to investigate the main reasons for employing visual ornaments and proposes some probable reasons t…

  • A bizánci állam régészeti kutatásáról

    Ádám Bollók•ARTICLE•Antik Tanulmányok•2011

Jelen tanulmány a bizánci állam fennállása idején a Bizánci Birodalom fennhatósága alatt álló területeken folytatott régészeti feltárások történetét, illetve a kutatás jelen állását kívánja röviden bemutatni. Tekintettel arra, hogy bár sok, főként ősrégészek és klasszika-archaeológusok által hosszú ideje vallatott lelőhelyen váltak ismertté bizánci rétegek, „bizánci régészet” megfelelően körülhatárolt formában mégsem létezik, első lépésként az ös…
