    Open Access•Anett Gémes, Gábor V Szabó et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropologiai Közlemények•2026

Background: The Gava culture dominated the Eastern Carpathian Basin (12–9th c. Despite its prominence, cemeteries associated with the culture are largely unknown. In the 9–8th centuries BCE, the appearance of steppe-related Mezocsat culture introduced significant changes, including rare …

As part of a new research project, the team of the Institute of Archaeological Sciences of the Eötvös Loránd University has been investigating the Early Iron Age hillfort at Dédestapolcsány-Verebce-bérc since 2020. Based on the results of previous fieldwalk sessions and metal detector surveys, we conducted excavations in 2022 to investigate the effects of the Iron Age siege on the settlement. We unearthed the remains of two buildings, one of whic…

  • Rescue Excavation in Aggtelek-Baradla Cave in 2019

Open Access•Ádám Artúr Nyírő, Balázs Holl et al.•ARTICLE•Dissertationes Archaeologicae•2023•References: 1

The team of the Institute of Archaeological Sciences of the Eötvös Loránd University conducted a rescue excavation in the Baradla Cave in 2019. The work concentrated in a passage leading to a less-researched branch of the cave (the so-called Róka-ág [Fox Branch]) and one of the lesser rooms named Biológiai labor (Biological Laboratory). The passage towards the low and narrow Róka-ág was used for millennia, as attested by the objects from various …

  • Tállya-Óvár: New paths in the research of hillforts in the North Hungarian Mountains

Open Access•Marcell Barcsi, Péter Bíró et al.•ARTICLE•Hungarian Archaeology•2022

The systematic survey programme started in 2006 by a dedicated team of the Institute of Archaeological Scien…

  • Tállya-Óvár: Új utak az Északi-középhegység erődített településeinek kutatásában

Open Access•Marcell Barcsi, Péter Bíró et al.•ARTICLE•Magyar Régészet•2022

Magyarországon az Északi-középhegység területéről 44 késő bronzkorra és kora vaskorra keltezett magaslati erődített települést lehetett eddig azonosítani. Kutatásukban Nováki Gyula mára legendássá vált topográfiai munkája hozott nagy előrelépést, amelynek során felderítette, bejárta és felmérte a 19. század végétől megismert, illetve az általa újonnan felfedezett lelőhelyeket. Hasonló információbővüléssel járt az a 2006-tól indult szisztematikus …

  • A Shooting Experiment with Reconstructed Scythian Arrows and Bows: New Data on the Iron Age Siege at Dédestapolcsány-Verebce-tető

    Open Access•Gábor Szabó, Gábor V Szabó et al.•ARTICLE•Hungarian Archaeology•2021

The archaeological research of the last decades revealed that around the beginning of the Middle Iron Age, at the end of the 7th century BC, the territory of Northeast Hungary and Western Slovakia and the eastern part of today’s Czech Republic were hit by an extensive series of attacks. Approximately 20 fortified settlements are known today where bronze arrowheads, found along pristine hillfort walls, bear witness to devastating sieges that occur…
