Excavations in the legionary fortress of Brigetio in 2025
Research of the legionary camp at Brigetio began in 2015. Over the past 10 years, excavations have extended to the principia, a Late Roman apsidal basilica-type building, and the military bathhouse. During the 2025 season, a surface area of 7,100 m2 was excavated. The surfaces were situated relatively far from one another, functioning as test trenches across the praetentura. Ground-penetrating radar surveys had revealed the locations of several b…
Pilisszentiván-Hárs-erdő 2025
A team of the Institute of Archaeological Sciences of the Eötvös Loránd University have opened new areas for excavation at the Pilisszentiván-Hárs-erdő Roman village site. Where did Valentinian die
The death of the Emperor Valentinian I on the 17th of November 375, marked one of the most significant events in the Late Roman history of Pannonia. This study seeks to reassess the circumstances of the Quadi–Sarmatian attack of 374, the fortification program along the Ripa Pannonica, and the transformation of the legionary fortress at Brigetio in the Late Roman period, through the integration of historical texts (primarily Ammianus Marcellinus) …
Same but different
Attic black-figure vases from the Late Archaic and Early Classical periods are often neglected by scholars. Most of them are not included in the Beazley Archive Pottery Database, significantly hindering related research. This paper presents such a vase from the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest. The authors propose that the scene on the lekythos, akin to others from the era, is a simplified version of a more elaborate one
Excavation of a Roman settlement in the north-western hinterland of Aquincum (Óbuda, Hungary) at Pilisszentiván
As part of a new research project and a local history research project, a team of the Institute of Archaeological Sciences of the Eötvös Loránd University and the Archeovertex Ltd. excavated a Roman rural settlement in the territory of Pilisszentiván. The settlement is located in the northwestern hinterland of the Roman town of Aquincum (today: Óbuda, Hungary) in a scarcely investigated area. We documented the previously uncovered but unpublished…
Short Report on the Excavations in the Legionary Fortress of Brigetio in 2021-2022
While the legionary fortress of Brigetio is one of the key sites in the province of Roman Pannonia, its inner structure and buildings are almost unknown. Although the retentura of the legionary fortress is almost entirely covered by modern buildings, the praetentura can be researched using remote sensing methods. Over the past few years, systematic excavations took place in the praetentura, based on results of the geophysical surveys. A large bui…
Excavations in Brigetio in 2020
In 2020, excavations were carried out simultaneously at several locations both in the territory of the legionary fortress and the military town of Brigetio. As a result, new information was gained regarding the structure of the legionary fortress and a number of late Roman period graves were also identified. The most significant result of the campaign was the excavation of an almost intact cellar in the western zone of the canabae
Excavations in the legionary fortress of Brigetio in 2019
In 2019 the excavations in Brigetio focused on the area of the northern gate of the legionary fortress, as the geophysical surveys conducted in the previous year allowed the identification of both the porta praetoria and the via praetoria leading through it. These fieldworks, beside providing new information on the topography of the legionary fortress regarding the porta praetoria and the via praetoria, were also significant from a methodological…

Short report on the excavations in the legionary fortress of Brigetio (2017–2018)
After the aerial archaeological surveys of the preceding years, a new excavation project has been started in 2017 in the northern part of the legionary fortress of Brigetio. The main result of the seasons of 2017 and 2018 were the unearthing of a large Late Roman apsidal building, which can be most probably connected to the death of Valentinian I
A New Method in Attribution? Attempts of the Employment of Geometric Morphometrics in the Attribution of Late Archaic Attic Lekythoi
In the Late Archaic - Early Classic period, the Attic ceramic industry was characterized by a kind of duality. On the one hand, the red-figure technique was flourishing, when Euphronios’, Douris’ or the Berlin Painter’s works represented the height of Greek vase painting. On the other hand, the market was also covered by large quantities of low-quality black-figure pottery. Not only in Athens, but even in the whole Ancient Mediterranean these mas…
