  • New data to the Bell Beaker period from Vas County (Western Hungary): New settlements of the Bell Beaker complex and other archaeological periods on a site on the outskirts of Bucsu

    Gábor Ilon•ARTICLE•Acta Archaeologica Academiae…•2025

Our current understanding of the Bell Beaker complex is based on sites in the area of Budapest and a few in the territory of today's Western Hungary and Eastern Austria. This study presents a reassessment of the related sites in Vas County: Bucsu–Hosszú-Aszú-dűlő, Csepreg, Szombathely–Zanat, and Vát–Rátka-patak keleti oldala [‘the eastern bank of Rátka Stream’], and includes a detailed discussion of the find material and features excavated in 200…

  • New specimen of an Early Iron Age brooch type from Western Transdanubia: A stray find from Simaság

    Open Access•Gábor Ilon•ARTICLE•Dissertationes Archaeologicae•2025

The museum obtained the two-loop nodular (or knobbed) bow brooch, a stray find, in 1970. The jewellery, 66 mm long and weighing 22.6 g, is still in good condition today. Its shape is a mixture of Types 6a and 6d in Stane Gabrovec’s system, which were in vogue in the Ha C1–2 phases, i.e., from the mid-8th to the mid-7th centuries BC. In lack of a find context and accompanying finds, the artefact in focus cannot be dated more precisely within this …

  • A bronze “pendant” from the outskirts of Ménfőcsanak (North-West Hungary)

    Open Access•Gábor Ilon•ARTICLE•Communicationes Archaeologicae…•2023

The paper presents a stray find, part of the archaeological record of the Late Bronze Age settlement and cemetery discovered in Győr-Ménfőcsanak-Széles-földek-dűlő. The cast “wheel-shaped pendant” has three close analogies: one from an unknown site in Hungary, another from a depot in Slovakia, and the third from a lakeside settlement in Switzerland. The “pendant” could be assigned to the late Urnfield Culture (Ha B1)

  • The Vámoscsalád-Kavicsbánya Site (Vas County): Preliminary Results of the Evaluation of the Lithic Assemblage

    Open Access•Norbert Faragó, Attila Péntek et al.•ARTICLE•Dissertationes Archaeologicae•2023•References: 7

The archaeological artefacts of the Vámoscsalád-Kavicsbánya site were discovered, collected and preserved by István Marton and his brother, András Marton, mineral collectors from Mesterháza, in about 2015. The slight elevation on a terrace of the Répce River was mined for the M86 highway in 2012–2013. Apart from knapped stone tools, the main subject of our paper, several polished serpentinite and greenschist tools have been recovered from the sit…

  • Halomsíros kocsimodell töredéke Mesterházáról (Nyugat-Magyarország, Vas megye)

    Open Access•Gábor Ilon•ARTICLE•Communicationes Archaeologicae…•2021

    Open Access•Gábor Ilon•ARTICLE•Dissertationes Archaeologicae•2020•References: 1

Three features, dated to diverse periods of prehistory (Neolithic: Transdanubian Linear Pottery Culture; Bronze Age: Tumulus culture; Iron Age: Celtic Period) are presented in the current study. One of our main goals is to encourage the introduction of an otherwise generally accepted protocol for the investigation and sampling of similar phenomena to Hungarian archaeological research. The method focuses on the examination of 1, complete or partia…
