Thoughts on the Utility of a Bivariate‐splitting Approach to Olmec Ceramic Data Interpretation
A recently resolved debate centred on the interpretation of a major set of INAA data that was based on Olmec ceramics from Mexico. In an attempt to answer questions arising from the debate, this paper discusses the effect of numbers of samples chosen for data interpretation. It also presents interpretations of the ceramic data set based on a bivariate data‐splitting approach and compares the results of this with the multivariate analysis approach…
The effectiveness of re-treatment for adolescents who stutter
This study investigated the effectiveness of re-treatment for 12 adolescents who participated in a previously reported controlled trial for stuttering two to six years ago and who were experiencing difficulties maintaining treatment gains. The programme was successful in producing significant reductions in percentage syllables stuttered (%SS), increases in syllables per minute (SPM) and speech naturalness after two years. There-treatment programm…
Managing adolescents who relapse following treatment for stuttering
Preventing relapse following treatment for stuttering remains a clinical priority. This paper introduces a relapse management programme offered to six adolescents who had improved their fluency immediately following treatment but who had relapsed in the long-term. This paper details the effectiveness of this programme. Relapse was based on the six subjects' stuttering frequency after at least two years following their original treatment. Their st…
Difficulties in implementing group cognitive behaviour therapy for spinal cord injured persons
The main purpose of this clinical discussion is to illustrate and describe some of the barriers that arise when attempting to implement group cognitive-behaviour therapy (CBT) in a spinal cord injury (SCI) hospital-ward context. Difficulties encountered included patient characteristics, denial, avoidance, schedule conflicts, difficulties in group formation, and erratic attendance due to patient illness. Despite the pragmatic and motivational prob…
Can Pay? Won't Pay?' or Economic Principles of 'Affordability
The term 'afford ability' has been gaining currency in housing policy debates, but neither government nor academic researchers have given much consideration to defining it. This paper considers what meanings have been given to the term affordability in practice and suggests a range of analytically more useful definitions. It argues from economic first principles that it is more logical to use some form of residual income definition than one based…
Psychological toxicity of bereavement
Bereavement is often a highly distressing experience that can have serious consequences. Therefore, it is important for health professionals to better understand the nature of this distress and trauma. However, further research is needed in this area, for there are few controlled bereavement studies that have used standardised measures of the impact of bereavement. Furthermore, there is a need for further controlled and systematic Australian rese…
