Neural connectivity underlying core language functions
Effects of the Amazonian Psychoactive Beverage Ayahuasca on Binocular Rivalry
An early theoretical analysis supposed changes in hemispheric integration as the basis of altered state of consciousness induced by psychoactive drugs. Brain imaging studies revealed right cortical activation after administration of hallucinogens. Recent studies on binocular rivalry suggest that interhemispheric switching is the neural substrate of the perceptual oscillations observed during dichoptic stimulus presentation. The current study test…

Gedney Goes Bohemian
Psychics and ESP—stereotypes not techniques answer the question
Thalbourne's (1990) latest criticism of our population stereotype study (Grimmer & White, 1986) identifies yet again four deficiencies in our technique and yet again observes that we have failed to master appropriate experimental techniques. We respond to the issues he raised

Psychics and ESP
Psychics and ESP
While ostensibly investigating telepathically sent messages, the present experiment examined subjects' preferred responses, i.e. population stereotypes. Undergraduate students (N = 351) were asked a series of questions such as: “I am thinking of a number from 1 to 10. Write down the first number that comes to mind.” Throughout the series the experimenter thought of, or “sent”, non-stereotyped answers in order to test for the effects of ESP. While…
The Ego Reference System
A study was carried out using an Australian sample, to confirm the existence of a number of factors which had been found in a previous American study relating to Ego and Super-ego structure and functioning. A questionnaire based upon the original study but with additional items added to provide an equal number for each factor, had been developed in New Zealand and tried out experimentally on several small groups and mean scores obtained for each …
The australian journal of psychology
Material appearing in the Australian Journal of Psychology was examined for the period 1949 to 1978. Over the three decades changes were identified in the structural characteristics of the articles, their source and patterns of authorship, methods used, groups studied, and content areas investigated. A number of trends emerged. There was an increase in the number of contributors from universities, especially from within Australia. Males continue …
The Australian Psychologist
The content of the Australian Psychologist was examined for a 12‐year period. Among topics investigated were the journal's composition, authorship patterns, and authors' affiliation. In addition, the methodology, group selected, and subject area studied were also identified for each article. Although changes have occurred the typical article is likely to be authored by a male academic psychologist; his methodology is empirical; and the work repor…
The measurement of imagery vividness
Over 2000 undergraduate psychology students completed Sheehan's (1967a) revision of Betts' (1909) Questionnaire Upon Mental Imagery. Females and older subjects reported significantly more vivid imagery than males or younger subjects. When modalities were ranked in order of evoked imagery vividness the pattern did not agree with previous work and it was suggested that rankings may be test specific rather than universal. Additional data were presen…
The Effects of Instructions on Subjects' Imagery Questionnaire Scores
Groups of about 35 subjects were given Neutral, Low and High motivating instructions before completing the Shortened Form of Betts' Questionnaire upon Mental Imagery. The results for imaging scores in all seven sensory modalities tapped by this questionnaire indicated that the instructions significantly influenced subjects' responses. The data were interpreted as supporting the hypothesis that perceived desirability of claiming intense images con…
