  • Syndromes of Sport Corruption and Quantum Jump-Resembled Transition: Focusing on Match-Fixing

  • Two major modes of East Asian marine heatwaves

    Open Access•Seonju Lee, Myung‐Sook Park et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2020

We show two major modes of East Asian marine heatwaves (MHWs) associated with two contrasting sea surface temperature patterns over the subtropical western North Pacific (WNP). In the first MHW mode, ocean warming over East Asia occurs along with the subtropical WNP from the earlier winter by an El Niño-Southern Oscillation. The basin-wide ocean warming is finally intensified to an extreme warming state around East Asia, where a high-pressure reg…

  • Jipjang: Following the tradition of preparing a fermented Korean household (jongka) staple food

Open Access•Chang Hyeon Lee, Young Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnic Foods•2018•References: 12

South Korea, home of the soybean, features diverse traditional fermented soy products. Jipjang (汁醬) is made by mixing autumn vegetables in meju powder prepared by boiling and fermenting soybeans and wheat with saccharified water. Jipjang has been documented since the early Joseon period, but its traditional path has been severed, becoming a local specialty in some southern regions and altered into other forms of jang. However, some jongka (宗家, tr…

  • Ssam food recipe: A case study on jongka ancestral ritual food

Open Access•Chang Hyeon Lee, Young Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Ethnic Foods•2018•References: 7

Jongka (宗家, a traditional Korean family) is a traditional Korean familial system that has existed since the mid-Chosun period (1392–1910). The present study explores the etymology and historical value of a representative ancestral ritual food of jongka, “ssam (쌈).” Over many years, ssam has been gradually modified from its original form. This study seeks to identify the history of ssam's transformation and to determine its original form. Three re…

  • The origins of the Korean War: Civil war or Stalin's Rollback

Young Ho Kim, Youngho Kim•ARTICLE•Diplomacy and Statecraft•1999•References: 13

This essay seeks to evaluate civil war theories on the origins of the Korean War by distinguishing between the permissive and efficient causes of war. These theories explain the causes of the war in terms of an extension of border clashes. To explain the efficient cause, Bruce Cumings advances the controversial ‘second mosaic’ thesis which argues that the war was sparked by the South's provocative actions on the Ongjin peninsula, and quickly spre…

  • Distributions of Postpartum Amenorrhea: Some New Evidence

Open Access•Kathleen Ford, Young Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•1987•Cited by: 10•References: 11

Breastfeeding and the amenorrhea related to it are important determinants of fertility levels. Breastfeeding practices vary widely across and within countries, and there is evidence of change in the extent of breastfeeding in several areas. It is therefore important in demographic research on fertility to measure precisely the length of amenorrhea. Because of the large costs involved in data collection, most data on amenorrhea have been obtained …
