  • Anthropomorphic Images at the Padjelanta Site, Northern Sweden

    Open Access•Inga-Maria Mulk, Inga‐Maria Mulk et al.•ARTICLE•Current Swedish Archaeology•2021•References: 5

The paper discusses three phases of scratched images from the Padjelanta site of Sámi rock art in Laponia, northern Sweden. Pre-dating the middle phase of Viking Age/Medieval period sailing boats is a set of stylised anthopomorphs. These early images resemble certain petroglyphs from Alta, goddess motifs on Sami drums, and the Earth Mother figure in the Manrlajsmyths. Possible ritual contexts for the Padjelanta images are discussed, including aut…

  • Conflicts Over the Repatriation of Sami Cultural Heritage in Sweden

    Inga-Maria Mulk, Inga‐Maria Mulk•ARTICLE•Acta Borealia•2009•Cited by: 6•References: 4

More than 400 years of colonization and assimilation policy by the Nordic states has created a new situation for Sami culture. Over this long period the Sami heritage has become thoroughly marginalized, but today the more overt conflicts that we find elsewhere in the world between colonizing states and indigenous peoples have diminished. Such conflicts are, perhaps, more characteristic of an earlier stage of the colonial frontier, and they have b…

  • Sailing boats in Padjelanta

    Tim Bayliss‐smith, Inga‐Maria Mulk•ARTICLE•Acta Borealia•1999•Cited by: 7•References: 2

Six figures of boats, four of them large sailing boats, have been found scratched on an outcrop of soapstone at a site in a mountain valley at about 700m altitude in Padjelanta, northern Sweden. In addition some human figures and a harnessed reindeer are depicted. An iconic resemblance exists between aspects of the Padjelanta sailing boats (e.g. hull shape, side rudders, anchor, sails) and the larger boats used by farmers or traders in the fjords…

  • Sámi Rock Engravings from the Mountains in Laponia, northern Sweden

    Open Access•Tim Bayliss‐smith, Tim Bayliss-Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Folklore Electronic Journal of…•1999

In this paper we present a description of some rock engravings that have been discovered by reindeer herders in Padjelanta, on the fringes of the Sarek Mountains in Lapland, northern Sweden. The site has now been registered, but it has not yet been fully researched and is unprotected, so its precise location will not be disclosed. In this paper we shall call it the Padjelanta site. The pictures there include various figures – animals including re…
