  • Radiocarbon dating of the iron production in slag-pit furnaces in Jutland

Kaare Lund Rasmussen, Uffe Rahbek et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Danish Archaeology•2006

Seventy-three samples of charred straw and charcoal from slag-pit furnaces on eleven different iron smelting sites in Jutland have been radiocarbon dated in order to investigate the duration of the use of the slag-pit furnace in iron production. At the following four major sites we have estimated the duration of iron production: DrengstedAD 410–550SnorupAD 330–570StarupAD 140–340GodsvangAD 300–550 Taken as a whole we have dated the use of slag-pi…

  • Magnetometric investigations of stone constructions within large ancient barrows of Denmark and Crimea

Open Access•T N Smekalova, Tatyana Smekalova et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2005•Cited by: 5

Two examples of magnetic investigations of large barrows in Denmark and Crimea (Ukraine) are presented. The magnetic field over the Danish barrows containing megalithic graves results from the superposition of many different dipole anomalies from granite boulders. The magnetic map revealed a corridor and a chamber of a barrow in Draaby, which are adjacent to a similar, previously excavated feature. A circular wall of smaller stones, which surroun…

  • Archaeomagnetic investigations of Iron Age slags in Denmark

    Open Access•Niels Abrahamsen, Bo Holm Jacobsen et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2002•Cited by: 6•References: 1

In Denmark iron production, by means of reducing bog‐iron ore with charcoal, was carried out at least between the second and seventh century AD . Since the 1960s magnetic mapping of iron slag remains have been used extensively at several sites in the southwestern part of Jutland in Denmark (e.g. at Drengsted, Snorup, Krarup and Yderik). A description of some of the magnetic surveying results, ideas of magnetic modelling, and magnetic and chemical…
