All That Heaven Allows
In the last book of The Consolation of Philosophy , Boethius develops his solution to the problem of divine foreknowledge and free choice. Interpreters standardly hold that this problem and his solution to it presuppose causal indeterminism. In this paper, I argue that Boethius, following a Neoplatonist view found in Proclus, is a causal determinist and compatibilist and maintains that God’s providential knowledge ensures the occurrence of all th…
Freedom and Responsibility in Neoplatonist Thought
What does it mean to be free, and what are the metaphysical conditions for freedom? What are the prerequisites for being an agent who can be held responsible for their actions? What connection, if any, is there between freedom and responsibility? Ursula Coope poses these enduring questions to the Neoplatonists, who represent the dominant philosophical tradition in late antiquity, beginning with Plotinus in the third century AD and extending throu…
Everything in Nature is in Intellect
According to a straightforward reading of Enn. 6.2.21, all principles ( logoi ) in nature have their origin in corresponding features of a divine Intellect. But interpreters have often advocated more restricted readings of Intellect’s contents. These restricted readings are based in part on other textual evidence, and in part on the concern that a more expansive reading would require Intellect to think objects that are of trivial value (‘the valu…
The Lancet NCDI Poverty Commission
Noncommunicable Disease (NCD) strategic plans in low- and lower-middle income Sub-Saharan Africa
BACKGROUND: Global efforts to address NCDs focus primarily on 4-by-4 interventions - interventions to prevent and treat four groups of conditions affecting mainly older adults (some cardiovascular disease and cancers, type 2 diabetes, chronic respiratory disease) and four associated risk factors (alcohol, tobacco, poor diets, and physical inactivity). However, the NCD burden in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is composed of a more diverse set of conditi…
Plotinus’ Unaffectable Soul
In Ennead 3. 6 Plotinus maintains that the soul is unaffectable. This thesis is widely taken to imply that his soul is exempt from change and free from emotional 'affections'. Yet these claims are difficult to reconcile with evidence that Plotinian souls acquire dispositional states, such as virtues, and are subjects of emotional 'affections', such as anger. This paper offers an alternative account. In denying affections to soul, Plotinus is offe…
Causation and Creation in Late Antiquity
Written by a group of leading scholars, this unique collection of essays investigates the views of both pagan and Christian philosophers on causation and the creation of the cosmos. Structured in two parts, the volume first looks at divine agency and how late antique thinkers, including the Stoics, Plotinus, Porphyry, Simplicius, Philoponus and Gregory of Nyssa, tackled questions such as: is the cosmos eternal? Did it come from nothing or from so…
Mindsets, mind sets and mind sense
This paper theorises that a person’s mindset is a commonplace trait that has an impact in economic systems. A mindset contrasts with other theoretics which use choice and information sets to limit the economic actor’s decision-making by focusing on the description of a person’s knowledge rather than on available options. The persistent way a person thinks about the world influences their treatment of information and further development of knowled…
EU Democracy Assistance Discourse in Its New Response to a Changing Neighbourhood
Drawing on Critical Discourse Analysis, this article compares the structure of key policy documents on European Union (EU) democracy promotion in the Southern Neighborhood before and after the “Arab Uprisings.” With reference to the key document presenting the EU's revised conception of democracy and strategic vision in the Southern Neighborhood, this article argues that, despite assertions of a paradigmatic shift in the EU's approach to democrac…
How Plotinus’ Soul Animates his Body
In this paper I offer an analysis of Plotinus’ argument for the existence of a quasi-psychic entity, the so-called ‘trace of soul’, that functions as an immanent cause of life for an organism’s body. I argue that Plotinus posits this entity primarily in order to account for the body’s possession of certain quasi-psychic states that are instrumental in his account of soul-body interaction. Since these quasi-psychic states imply that an organism’s …
