Management systems of adhesive materials throughout the Neolithic in the North-West Mediterranean
L’ouvr…
New insights on Neolithic food and mobility patterns in Mediterranean coastal populations
OBJECTIVES: The aims of this research are to explore the diet, mobility, social organization, and environmental exploitation patterns of early Mediterranean farmers, particularly the role of marine and plant resources in these foodways. In addition, this work strives to document possible gendered patterns of behavior linked to the neolithization of this ecologically rich area. To achieve this, a set of multiproxy analyses (isotopic analyses, dent…
Mihriban Özbaşaran, Günes Duru et Mary Stiner (dir.) – The early settlement at Aşıklı Höyük. Essays in honor of Ufuk Esin

Phytoliths as a seasonality indicator? The example of the Neolithic site of Pendimoun, south-eastern France
Recent research into the European Neolithisation process and the development of farming communities reveals a diverse and complex cultural landscape. In the Western Mediterranean, it is now well known that the first agro-pastoral economy appears around 6000 BCE in south-eastern Italy and that part of these sites, often grouped under the generic term “Impressed Ware”, represent the departure point for the diffusion of the Neolithic economy. In thi…

Modelling the earliest north-western dispersal of Mediterranean Impressed Wares
The authors attempt to specify the diffusion pattern of the Impressed-Ware Neolithic (Impresso-cardial complex, ICC), from south-eastern Italy onto the French Mediterranean coasts. Using ChronoModel® software, a Bayesian model was built with sets of dates obtained on well-contextualised, short-lived samples. The results highlight a clear tightening of the chronology in the so-called nuclear area (Apulia, Basilicata, Calabria) and a pioneer dispe…
Laboratory Excavation of a Neolithic Grave from Avignon-La Balance-Ilot P (France)
The grave of La Balance-Ilot P, in Avignon, southern France, is an individual and isolated burial, attributed in the 1970′s to the Mesolithic or the Early Neolithic. The grave, partially unearthed, was exhibited and stored at the Calvet Museum until its rediscovery and laboratory excavation in 2009. We used 3D laser recording and field anthropological methods, followed by a multidisciplinary approach. The deceased, an adult male, was buried in pr…
Formation of Fluid Inclusions during Heat Treatment of Barremo-Bedoulian Flint
At the end of the fifth millennium bc, the development of a specialized lithic industry in the Chassey societies of south-eastern France and its dissemination as far as Catalonia and Tuscany attest to important socio-economic changes in the Mediterranean Neolithic societies. The lithic production was made on barremo-bedoulian flint that was heat-treated to improve the sharpness of the tools produced. Microscopic observations of archaeological and…
Spiralled patchwork in pottery manufacture and the introduction of farming to Southern Europe
A collective grave from the 6th to 5th millennia transition BCE
Excavated in the middle of the 1960’ by M. Sechter, the site of Mougins – Bréguières, in Southeastern France, appears of a huge patrimonial and scientific interest, due to the exceptional abundance and preservation of human bones, the singularity of associated material, and the specificity of the place, a fault, where the corpses were left. In the frame of the ETICALP project, direct dating of bone collagen has been run in order to define the chr…

First Sculpted Human Face in the Western Mediterranean Early Neolithic
The development of the Neolithic way of life in the western Mediterranean during the sixth millennium cal. BC is the consequence of the spread of populations from the Near East after successive stages of cultural remodelling. Despite the clear contribution of the Near Eastern and Aegean Neolithic to the economic and technical changes that happened to the west, little is known here about their symbolic legacies, because of the scarcity of represen…

Çayönü tepesi provides significant data for understanding the Neolithization process in Mesopotamia, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Anatolian Plateau. This paper proposes modifications to current approaches, since the Neolithic chipped stone industries generally comprise heterogeneous assemblages of lithic sets or subsets. These latter correspond to chaînes opératoires and to processes of sampling, transport and use, which differed considerabl…

Literature proves the importance of the role of information technology in increasing the effectiveness of virtual R&D teams’ communication for new product development. However, the factors that make information technology construct in a virtual R&D team are still ambiguous. Managers of virtual R&D teams for new product development do not know “which type of technology should be used”. To address the gap and answer the question, the paper presents…

The authors present the state of founds and analysis of obsidian industries in the Provence region. The series linked to a precise archaeological context remain very few. They are often connected with the different stages of the Southern Chassey Complex known for a high level of exchange processes. The successive exploitation of the Liparian and Sardinian sources, as well as the raw material procurement strategy, lets the authors disprove the Ren…

This paper proposes a synthesis of the excavations of "Kaletepe Deresi 3", an open air Palaeolithic site located in the volvanic region of Central Anatolia (Turkey). The activity of this geological complex generated an important intrusion of obsidian largely used during the prehistoric periode for tool making. The site is located a few kilometers on the eastern slopes of the Göllü Dağ volcano in the proximity of the Kömürcü obsidian intrusions wh…

Europe's First Farmers
Plants and animals originally domesticated in the Near East arrived in Europe between 7000 and 4000 BC. Was the new technology introduced by migrants, or was it an 'inside job'? How were the new species adapted to European conditions? What were the immediate and long-term consequences of the transition from hunting and gathering to farming? These central questions in the prehistory of Europe are discussed here by leading specialists, drawing on s…
