Considering Covid-19
COVID-19, an infectious disease caused by novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) caused dramatic changes in all aspects of daily life. As the British public was ordered to stay at home, non-essential businesses shut their doors, resulting in an abrupt shift in working practices towards home working. In higher education, university campuses closed to students and staff. In this article, two disabled lecturers working in…
Visualizing lived experience
This article demonstrates the power of employing alternative, interpretative analysis techniques in ethnographic work. The author argues for the role of sensory interpretation as a valid and necessary method of analytical enquiry, particularly to challenge existing dominant, primarily written discourses that often strive for unrealistic empirical objectivity. In order to make this argument, he demonstrates a combined sonic/visual, interpretative …
Games as (Not) Culture
This article presents a critical examination of European policy in relation to gamification. We begin by describing how gamification “traveled” as an idea, evolving from controversial yet persuasive buzzword to legitimate policy priority. The European Discourse in Germany, 1939-1950
This article seeks to contextualize support after the Second World War for European integration in Germany, analysing continuities between interwar, wartime and postwar debates about unifying Europe both within and beyond Germany. Using such a temporal framing serves to highlight that many groups advocating European integration in the post-1945 period emerged out of more long-standing internationalist communities, not all of whom had supported in…
The Life and Times of Admiral Sir Frank Twiss
Precious blood
This study of a particular district of a Massachusetts town indicates how, over the space of some 70 years, patterns of work have changed dramatically. Making particular use of oral history methodology, the study identifies the changing significance of economic shifts over three generations and focuses on the ethnic composition of the workforce. It notes the differential experiences for the various groups and the processes whereby cultural values…
