Theories and Frameworks Used in Research on Fatherhood and Men’s Antenatal Care Participation in Rural Sub-Saharan Africa: A Scoping Review
Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) has the worst maternal and newborn health outcomes, especially in rural areas. Men’s antenatal care (ANC) participation is often promoted to improve these outcomes, yet little is known about theories or frameworks guiding research on these issues. This scoping review aimed to identify, categorize, and critically examine theories and frameworks used in research on fatherhood and men’s ANC participation in rural SSA. Follow…
Relational contexts and men’s responsibilities informing men’s participation in antenatal care in rural sub-Saharan Africa: A scoping review
Men’s participation is critical to improving antenatal care (ANC) and maternal and child health outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), the region where these outcomes are the worst globally. Many current studies employ narrow, biomedical definitions that focus on men’s direct involvement in ANC. Little is known about how fatherhood and men’s participation in ANC are conceived or experienced in specific sociocultural contexts in SSA. We aimed to sy…
“Seeing Is Believing”: Identifying the Sexual and Reproductive Health Priorities of Adolescent Girls and Young Women in Freedom Park, South Africa Through an Adapted Body Mapping Approach
Objectives: This study uses a decolonized research approach to identify the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) priorities of adolescent women living in Freedom Park, Cape Town, South Africa. The history of colonialism and apartheid has a significant ongoing impact on the SRH of women in the community. The objectives of the research were for adolescent women to create a shared definition of SRH and identify SRH needs and priorities. Methods: A q…
Re-drawing the map: A case study of decolonized research methods & methodologies
This study illustrates how decolonized methodologies can be effectively implemented through community co-design, centering local knowledge while addressing power imbalances in research. The findings highlight the importance of self-determination in research design and the potential for adapted participatory methods to enhance data validity and community impact. Future research should continue to explore and document practical applications of deco…
Sociocultural Factors Shaping Fatherhood and Men's Participation in Antenatal Care in Rural Sub‐Saharan Africa: A Scoping Review
Men's participation is critical to improving antenatal care (ANC) utilisation and mother and child health in sub‐Saharan Africa (SSA). Additionally, current reviews typically examine sociocultural determinants narrowly as barriers or facilitators of men's direct involvement in biomedical ANC activities. We aimed to consolidate existing literature on sociocultural factors shaping fatherhood and men's participation in ANC in rural SSA to inform tai…
