A Marxist Critique of Mazzucato’s Mission-Oriented Capitalism
This paper presents a Marxist critique of Mariana Mazzucato’s mission-oriented policy framework, which promotes a proactive, entrepreneurial state to steer innovation toward social and ecological goals. While framed as a progressive alternative to neoliberalism, the paper argues that mission-oriented policy remains bound to the contradictions of capitalist accumulation. Drawing on Marx’s critique of political economy, theories of the capitalist s…
Patent Systems and Carbon Dioxide Emissions
This study explores the relationship between patent system strength and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions across 46 developed and developing countries from 1998 to 2017 using Fixed Effects (FE) and Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) models. The findings reveal that stronger patent regimes in developed countries are initially associated with higher emissions, suggesting that innovation may first drive industrial growth before transitioning to cl…
Public debt and income inequality in times of austerity
The impact of trade unions and government party orientation on income inequality
Purpose Despite the existing conceptual analysis on the impact of trade unions on employees' welfare and the wider economy, the mediating effect of political party orientation (i.e., right, centre and left) on income inequality remains under researched. In this paper, the authors empirically explore the relationship between the nature of political party orientation, trade unions and income inequality. Design/methodology/approach The authors use t…
Politics, government health expenditure and infant mortality
Purpose Motivated by the scant available evidence, this paper explores the relationship between government political party orientation and infant mortality. Design/methodology/approach A panel quantile methodology is applied to a data set that consists of 15 countries of the G20 group over the period 2000–2018. The authors control for heterogeneous parameters across countries and quantiles and obtain estimates across the different points of the c…
Covid-19, capitalism and political elites
It has been more than a year since the Covid-19 outbreak in Wuhan, one of the largest cities in China. The global tsunami that followed took the bourgeois regimes across the globe by surprise heralding a new era of socioeconomic misery, suggesting that this multifaceted crisis could become the worst crisis in the history of capitalism. The inability of the current political system to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic became apparent from the very o…
Developing a sustainability index for public health supply chains
Researchers and practitioners alike have become increasingly aware and interested in the sustainability of supply chains. The majority of the research in this area includes the triple-bottom approach of sustainability understanding the economic, social, and environmental outcomes of supply chain functions. Several sustainability measures have been presented in the literature to recognize the sustainability of supply chains helping stakeholders in…
The Greek economic crisis
The Greek economic crisis is primarily structural and the result of an international economic impasse that developed in 2007, with devastating implications for the struggling peripheral economies of Europe. This article suggests that falling profitability led to the stagnation of profits, which in turn discouraged new investment, decreased production and increased unemployment. The resulting recessionary economic environment, in conjunction with …
Classical Theory of Investment
In the realm of macroeconomic theory, it is well established that investment decisions play an instrumental role in the determination of the level of output and employment; nevertheless, little progress has been made in relation to the theoretical aspects of these decisions. This paper, inspired by the classical approach to capital accumulation as well as the Keynesian theory of effective demand, attempts to enhance our empirical understanding of…
Unemployment Revisited
The undertaken paper attempts to gain further insight into a string of factors thought to condition unemployment. By exposing the theoretical arguments of the Keynesian Neoclassical and radical/Marxian approaches we empirically estimate a hybrid unemployment equation, the generated evidence of which appears to be in line with both the Keynesian and Marxian tradition. For the empirical investigation, dynamic panel data analysis is applied to 20 OE…
