A spatially explicit inventory scaling approach to estimate urban CO2 emissions
Appropriate techniques to quantify greenhouse gas emission reductions in cities over time are necessary to monitor the progress of these efforts and effectively inform continuing mitigation. We introduce a scaling factor (SF) method that combines aircraft measurements and dispersion modeling to estimate urban emissions and apply it to 9 nongrowing season research aircraft flights around New York City (NYC) in 2018–2020. This SF approach uses a we…
Relative flux measurements of biogenic and natural gas-derived methane for seven U.S. cities
Using the Purdue University Airborne Laboratory for Atmospheric Research, we measured concentrations of methane and ethane emanating from seven U.S. cities (New York, NY, Philadelphia, PA, Washington, D.C./Baltimore, MD, Boston, MA, Chicago, IL, Richmond, VA, and Indianapolis, IN), in order to determine (with a median 95% CI of roughly 7%) the fraction of methane emissions attributable to natural gas (Thermogenic Methane Emission Ratio [TMER]), f…
Anthropogenic CO 2 emissions assessment of Nile Delta using XCO 2 and SIF data from OCO-2 satellite
We estimate CO 2 emissions from the Nile Delta region of Egypt, using over five years of column-averaged CO 2 dry air mole fraction (XCO 2 ) data from the NASA's OCO-2 satellite. The Nile Delta has significant anthropogenic emissions of CO 2 from urban areas and irrigated farming. It is surrounded by the Sahara desert and the Mediterranean Sea, minimizing the confounding influence of CO 2 sources in surrounding areas. We compiled the observed spa…
Assessment of methane emissions from the U.S. oil and gas supply chain
A leaky endeavor Considerable amounts of the greenhouse gas methane leak from the U.S. oil and natural gas supply chain. Alvarez et al. reassessed the magnitude of this leakage and found that in 2015, supply chain emissions were ∼60% higher than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency inventory estimate. They suggest that this discrepancy exists because current inventory methods miss emissions that occur during abnormal operating conditions. The…
Optimum air temperature for tropical forest photosynthesis
C-project of Talent, Hainan University; National Natural Science Foundation of China [31660142]; NASA LBA-DMIP project [NNX09AL52G]; NASA LBA investigation [CD-32]; National Science Foundation's Partnerships for International Research and Education (PIRE)
Methane Leaks from North American Natural Gas Systems
Methane emissions from U.S. and Canadian natural gas systems appear larger than official estimates.
