  • Freshwater Form of Fourhorn Sculpin (Myoxocephalus quadricornis) from Lake Tuborg, Ellesmere Island, Nunavut, with Reference to other Canadian Lacustrine and Riverine Populations

    Open Access•John A Babaluk, James D Reist et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2023

Fourhorn sculpin (Myoxocephalus quadricornis) is ubiquitous in Canadian Arctic waters with a more common marine and brackish form and a rarer freshwater form. There is a paucity of information available for the freshwater form from Canadian waters. In the summer of 2003, we serendipitously collected 28 of the freshwater form of fourhorn sculpin from Lake Tuborg, Ellesmere Island, Nunavut. The fish ranged in size from 62 mm to 171 mm total length …

  • Spawning, Overwintering and Summer Feeding Habitats Used by Anadromous Arctic Char ( Salvelinus alpinus ) of the Hornaday River, Northwest Territories, Canada

    Open Access•Lois A Harwood, John A Babaluk•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2014

Radio telemetry and t-bar tagging were used to locate sites used by Hornaday River Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) for overwintering, spawning, and summer feeding. Thirty char, 21 in August 1995 and nine in July and August 1999, were captured, radio-tagged, and released back into the Hornaday River. Tracking was done over 14 months in 1995 – 96 and over three months in 1999, using either aircraft (10 flights) or snowmobiles traveling on the rive…

  • Distribution and Biology of Bull Trout ( Salvelinus confluentus ) in the Mackenzie Valley, Northwest Territories, with Notes on Sympatry with Dolly Varden ( Salvelinus malma ) + Online Appendix 1 (See…

Open Access•Neil J Mochnacz, Rob Bajno et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2013

Streams were surveyed along the Mackenzie Valley, Northwest Territories, to investigate the distribution and biology of riverine char. Bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus) were captured in 24 of 43 streams sampled from three watersheds: the Kotaneelee River, the South Nahanni River, and the Central Mackenzie Mountains. The first confirmed sympatric bull trout and Dolly Varden (Salvelinus malma) populations in the Northwest Territories are reported…

  • Perfluorinated Chemicals in Meromictic Lakes on the Northern Coast of Ellesmere Island, High Arctic Canada + Online Appendix 1 (See Article Tools)

    Open Access•Julie Veillette, Derek C G Muir et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2012

Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) have been recorded in many types of marine and freshwater ecosystems. The aim of the present study was to examine meromictic lakes and their catchments on the far northern coast of Ellesmere Island, Nunavut, Canada, and to evaluate the results in the context of climate change. Our analyses revealed the presence of several PFCs in catchment snowpack, inflowing streams, lake water, and the aquatic food web of Lake A …

  • Long-Distance Migrations by Inconnu ( Stenodus leucichthys ) in the Mackenzie River Syste

Open Access•S A Stephenson, Stephen Stephenson et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2010

Inconnu (Stenodus leucichthys) stocks of the Mackenzie River drainage exhibit complex life histories. In a single stock, some fish may make occasional or regular movements between freshwater and marine environments while others lead a completely freshwater existence. Many inconnu migrate between the Mackenzie River system and the Beaufort Sea, but during spawning migrations, most are believed to move only as far south as the Rampart Rapids near t…

  • Summer Movements of Radio-tagged Arctic Charr ( Salvelinus alpinus ) in Lake Hazen, Nunavut, Canada

    Open Access•John A Babaluk, H Renee Wissink et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2001

Radiotelemetry was used to determine whether Lake Hazen arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) were anadromous and to determine movements of the charr within the lake. In 1995 and 1996, 62 and 55 charr, respectively, were captured, radio-tagged, and released back into the lake. A fixed data acquisition system recorded limited movements of radio-tagged charr in the upper reaches of the Ruggles River, the only outlet from the lake to the sea, in 1995. W…

  • First Records of Sockeye ( Oncorhynchus nerka ) and Pink Salmon ( O. gorbuscha ) from Banks Island and Other Records of Pacific Salmon in Northwest Territories, Canada

    Open Access•John A Babaluk, James D Reist et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•2000

Eight sexually mature sockeye (Oncorhynchus nerka) and one sexually mature pink salmon (O. gorbuscha) were captured in the subsistence fishery in the Sachs River estuary at Sachs Harbour, Banks Island, Northwest Territories (NT) in August 1993. We also report a first record for coho salmon (O. kisutch) in Great Bear Lake, NT. These capture locations are well outside the known distributions for the species. A pink salmon captured in the West Chann…

    Open Access•John A Babaluk, Norman M Halden et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1997

Scanning proton microprobe analysis was used to determine the distribution of strontium (Sr) in otoliths from arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) of known non-anadromous, known anadromous, and unknown life histories. Strontium concentration patterns in otoliths of known non-anadromous charr were low and relatively flat (with little variation) from the core area to the outermost edge of the otolith, while patterns for known anadromous charr were cha…
