  • Thoughts on the inequality of opportunities

Wallace Patrick Santos De Farias Souza, Ana Cláudia Annegues et al.•ARTICLE•CEPAL review•2017

This article evaluates the effects of a set of variables on the inequality of opportunities in Brazil, using the method developed by Li, Chen and Gao (2011) and combining data from the National Household Survey (PNAD) and Finanças do Brasil (FINBRA) on the Brazilian states for 1995-2012. The results show that economic growth has become less important in that debate than other conditioning factors over the last few years. The current pattern of ed…

  • Determinants of unfair inequality in Brazil, 1995 and 2009

Ana Cláudia Annegues, Erik Alencar De Figueiredo et al.•ARTICLE•CEPAL review•2016

This article analyses the trend of unfair inequality in Brazil (1995-2009) using a nonparametric approach to estimate the income function. The entropy metrics introduced by Li, Maasoumi and Racine (2009) are used to quantify income differences separately for each effort variable. A Gini coefficient of unfair inequality is calculated, based on the fitted values of the non-parametric estimation; and the robustness of the estimations, including circ…
