Networked Lives
Systems research investigates the relations between individuals as forming human systems, thus demonstrating that, without discernible social networks, no social system may be recognized. This study explores the concept of art as a social system through a combined framework of systems research, network modelling and relational sociology. Nine distinct types of social relations are identified as evident in art worlds, embedded within a multiplex, …
A scratch below a system's surface
Underlying a complex system is an intricate network that encodes the interactions between the system's components. Consequently, understanding of, and effective action upon, a complex system requires exploration and analysis of its underlying network. Recent published research on teaching/training social network analysis gives rise to at least four contributions of relevance to systems research. A synergistic advantage is perceptible, proportiona…
The emergence of problem structuring methods, 1950s–1989
Researchers need maps to effectively navigate increasingly voluminous literatures. This is no less the case in the field of problem structuring methods (PSMs). This paper offers an atlas of the journal literature of the theoretical development of, what are currently acknowledged to be, the four main PSMs up to their consolidation in 1989. A thorough contextual appreciation of the structure and dynamics of this literature sets the stage for addres…
A systemic approach to sociometric group research
Seeing the Forest for the Trees
Recent years have seen attempts to make sense of the politics–administration dichotomy. Triangulating among historical research, empirical observations, new models of interaction between politicians and administrators, and the division of the literature into “schools,” novel ways of understanding and examining the dichotomy have developed. These have been largely thematic and have revealed the extent of a literature spanning more than 120 years. …
Engineers as economists
This paper examines the circumstances and proceedings of the first management stream held at the 1886 meeting of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). Despite the significance accorded to the event, the management literature at times confounds historical appreciation with historical facts, leading to an inadvertent positing of erroneous implications or verifiably false assertions. A number of questions are thus raised that have rec…
A Blast at the Past
The decades since 1946 have seen repeated rhetoric supportive of Herbert Simon's critique, published that year, of Luther Gulick's ‘Notes on the Theory of Organization’ (published in 1937). The literature offers few contrary opinions against this support. The present article presents a minute analysis of Simon's arguments against Gulick. The reason for this focus is that the rhetoric supportive of Simon's critique addresses the manner in which he…
Decision support for organisational risk management by problem structuring
Risk management in the real world of commerce, enterprise and administration is problematic, not least because corporate or inter-organisational stakeholders often have very different perceptions of the task at hand. Sectional interests and hidden agendas permeate discussions of proposals for change, and uncertainties obscure the possible effects of decisions on objectives. The embedding of risk issues within resulting micropolitical tangles pres…
