Evolution of differential object marking in Macedonian dialects
By the late Middle Ages, a part of South Slavic, including Macedonian and Bulgarian, had lost nominal case inflection, leading to the disappearance of the old Slavic differential object marking (DOM) system. In the 19th century, some southern Macedonian dialects developed a new DOM system based on the preposition na ‘on, to’. This study explores the evolution of this DOM system by comparing Southern Macedonian texts from two periods — the mid-19t…
From a question word to a discourse marker
Quasi-passive reflexive constructions
It is common for languages crosslinguistically to employ the same verb form in several diathetic constructions distinguished by a different degree of agent suppression. In South Slavic languages the so called ‘quasi-passive reflexive se -constructions’ (QRCs) encode a number of non-factual situations, expressing an array of semantically close meanings unified by modal semantics. The paper argues that QRCs in South Slavic languages represent a gra…
The Spread of Potential Mood Marking in Conditionals in Standard Macedonian
This paper discusses the consequences of the reintroduction of the potential mood marker bi-construction into the system of conditional marking in standard Macedonian. This marker had been almost lost from the Balkanized conditional patterns in Macedonian dialects which were based on the opposition hypothetical vs. counterfactual. The counterfactual was realized by the isomorphic Balkan conditional type: subjunctive mood in the protasis and a con…
Zero-marked valency alternations in Macedonian
Artykuł omawia alternacje walencyjne, nie posiadające jawnego wykładnika w języku macedońskim. Wydaje się, że jest to ważna cecha typologiczna, która odróżnia macedoński od innych języków słowiańskich. W pracy przedstawiono ogólny opis tendencji labilności w odniesieniu do cech składniowych, semantycznych i dystrybucyjnych czasownika. Wykryto i przeanalizowano około 150 czasowników, wchodzących w labilność zachowującą przy alternacji patiensa i a…
The Contact Hypothesis Revised
The aim of this paper is to provide an explanation of the emergence of dom in peripheral Macedonian dialects through a reevaluation of the contact hypothesis. The southern and south-western dialects in the contact zones with Greek and Aromanian use a dative-based pattern to mark specific, predominantly human and animate referents. However, the contact hypothesis cannot fully explain the origin of dom in the southernmost dialects because it overlo…
Subject pronoun (non)realization in the English learner language of Macedonian speakers
This article investigates phenomena related to subject pronoun realization in the English interlanguage of Macedonian learners. Preliminary research indicates that learners tend to omit the subject pronoun in both referential and non-referential contexts. It can be presumed that such interlanguage features are due to crosslinguistic influence, given that Macedonian is a pro-drop language and makes no use of a dummy pronoun. The goal of this artic…
Apprehensive-epistemic Da-Constructions in Balkan Slavic
The research in this paper is focused on the apprehensive function of the particles da ne in Macedonian and da ne bi in Bulgarian as part of South Slavic subjunctive da-constructions. These clusters of particles are considered to be markers of a wider apprehensive-epistemic category. They are assumed to have undergone grammaticalization due to their morphosyntactic and prosodic unity. Even though there may be some contextual differences, these pa…
