    In The Secret Life of Saeed, the Pessoptimist , Emile Habiby (1922–1996) addresses the question of Palestinian historiography during the Mandate period through Al-Nakba of 1948 and the second defeat of the Arabs by Israel, in the 1967 June War.     Although the reputation of poet Mourid Barghouti (b. 1944) in the west rests on two personal memoirs, this article suggests that Barghouti's poetry deserves equal recognition. The long poem in Midnight and Other Poems (2005), the subject of this article, wrestles with the options of the modern exile.
