  • “Our Worst Enemy Seems to Be the Press”

    Chester Pach, Chester J Pach•ARTICLE•Diplomatic History•2010

On June 5, 1969, as President Richard M. Nixon was about to travel to Midway Island to meet with President Nguyen Van Thieu and announce the first withdrawal of U.S. troops from the Vietnam War, Secretary of State William P. • The Reagan Doctrine

    Open Access•Chester Pach, Chester J Pach•ARTICLE•Presidential Studies Quarterly•2006•Cited by: 3

Ronald Reagan never planned to announce what became known as the Reagan Doctrine. Two months after Reagan declared in his 1985 State of the Union address that the United States should not “break faith” with anti‐Communist resistance groups, a political commentator called that declaration the Reagan Doctrine. The Reagan administration's policies toward anti‐Communist resistance groups varied far more than the term “Reagan Doctrine” suggested. This…

  • Rock 'n' Roll Is Here to Stay

    Chester J Pach, C Pach•ARTICLE•OAH Magazine of History•2004

I remember when I got my first “rock ‘n’ roll single.” It was August 1957, the baby boom was at its peak, and the King was still the King. Like millions of other fans, I extended the King's reign by buying what was then Elvis Presley's number one single, “Teddy Bear.” Maybe I decided to make that eventful purchase after watching a new network television program, American Bandstand, which ABC began showing every weekday afternoon. Since I was only…

  • The Containment of U.S. Military Aid to Latin America, 1944?49

    Chester J Pach•ARTICLE•Diplomatic History•1982

Concern over Soviet expansionism in the late 1940s undercut longstanding plans of the administration of Harry S Truman to arm Latin America. This apparently contradictory development illustrates the complex effect of the Cold War on U.S. policy toward Latin America between 1945 and 1949. Cold War confrontations in Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean, and the Far East quickened fears in Washington of a Communist threat to the Americas and contribute…
