Theorizing experiential time in refugee migration: Speed and duration
This article theorizes the concept of experiential time in refugee migration. While recent migration studies have increasingly recognized the importance of immobility in understanding migration, research on refugee experiences remains predominantly focused on mobility from displacement through transit to settlement. This mobility-centric perspective overlooks the immobilities embedded within the broader mobility, which generate distinct temporali…
Temporal logics in geographical research on migration and refugees
This paper identifies and examines three key approaches prevalent in the geographical study of migration: the displacement and mobilities approach, the transit and waiting approach, and the immigrant settlement approach. Each approach is analyzed in terms of its treatment of time and migratory experiences, critiquing them for reinforcing conventional temporal categories: the past, present, and future. It argues that these categories are problemat…
Time and refugee migration in human geographical research: A critical review
Pre‐arrival temporalities of displacement in refugee migration: The case of resettled Ethiopian refugees in Australia
For refugees, displacement involves a reconfiguration of both space and time. Yet the temporal aspect receives less emphasis in existing geographic research. Paying attention to the temporal dimension can generate conceptually innovative insights into how temporality shapes refugees' experiences of displacement. Based on empirical research conducted with Ethiopian refugees in Melbourne, the paper considers how the participants experienced time th…
Temporal logics in urban place-making: The case of refugee-background Ethiopians in Australia
The human sense of temporality – the way we experience time – has become a major focus in urban geography and in research on human migration. However, little has been written about how refugee place-making activities are temporally mediated. For refugees – especially those from rural backgrounds – navigating unfamiliar urban temporalities is an important and overlooked layer within the broader challenge of settlement. This paper draws on 52 inter…
Flag Politics in Ethiopia and the Ethio-American Diaspora
Flags hold “rich symbolic and political connotations,” yet the examination of their use has been “relatively neglected in research on nationalism” (Eriksen, 2007, p. 1-2). Our study explores the transnational politics of Ethiopia’s national flag, exploring its manifestation within the EthioAmerican community in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, where the largest Ethiopian diaspora population in the United States resides. We also examine the h…
