  • Stability of the Gibb (1964) Experimental Test of Testwiseness

    Open Access•Paul M Miller, N S Fagley et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1988

This study investigated the reliability of the Gibb (1964) Experimental Test of Testwiseness, a performance measure (rather than a self-report measure) of testwiseness. The 70 multiple-choice items can be answered correctly using only secondary cues irrelevant to item content. Seventy undergraduate students participated. The two-week test-retest reliability coefficient was .64. Coefficient alpha was .61 for the first administration and .72 for th…

  • The Effects of Knowledge of Item Arrangement, Gender, and Statistical and Cognitive Item Difficulty on Test Performance

    Open Access•David S Lane, Kay S Bull et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1987

In two experiments the writers investigated the effects of statistical and cognitive difficulty ordering of test items, gender, and explicit labeling of item type on test performance of college students. Students were given tests with items written on various statistical and cognitive difficulty levels. In addition, some students received tests on which the items were explicitly labeled as to the cognitive difficulty (knowledge, comprehension, ap…

  • Performance of Adolescents Following Instruction in Conditional Reasoning

    Open Access•David S Lane, N Jo Campbell•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescent Research•1986•References: 5

One of the more controversial subjects in adolescent research is the ability of instruction to affect performance and ability of a formal operational task. This study investigated the ability of instruction to improve the development of conditional reasoning skills in younger adolescents. Participants (N= 61) were instructed in conditional reasoning utilizing two 50-minute question and answer periods and concrete materials. Adolescents in the rul…

  • Systematic Investigation of Critical Variables within a Conditional Reasoning Instructional System Used with Preadolescents

    Open Access•David S Lane•ARTICLE•The Journal of Early Adolescence•1986•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Preadolescent children received instruction in conditional reasoning in two separate experiments. Both experiments utilized experiential, small group instruction incorporating a Venn diagram format and movable blocks. These experiments investigated two important elements in this previously demonstrated, effective instructional system. Experiment I looked at whether the usage of the Venn diagram format facilitated performance better than another s…

  • Using Observation and Action Instruction to Facilitate Conditional Reasoning Performance in Early Adolescents

    Open Access•David S Lane•ARTICLE•The Journal of Early Adolescence•1983•Cited by: 3•References: 5

Early adolescent students (mean age=ten years, two months) received two 50-minute periods of instruction designed to increase their conditional syllogistic performance. The instructional method incorporated a logic board utilizing a Venn diagram format, blocks, and cards which illustrated all 16 conditional syllogisms. The study elaborated on an earlier work which had successfully utilized the instructional method. The action group children moved…
