  • Political Trust Influences the Relationship Between Income and Life Satisfaction in Europe

    Open Access•Jocelyne Clench‐Aas, Jocelyne Clench-Aas et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

Background: A high level of well-being is associated with personal, community and national income, as well as personal, social and political trust. How these measures relate to each other within and between countries and within and across structural levels of society is largely unknown. To study this, we propose a three-layer nested socio-structural model. Each layer (individual, community, country) contains a measure of income, trust and satisfa…

  • Mental distress among young adults – gender differences in the role of social support

Open Access•Rune Johansen, Mari Nicholls Espetvedt et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

Social support appears to have a stronger role as a protective factor for mental distress among young women, compared to young men and older persons. This has implications for health promoting activities that target young women. Sense of coherence showed a strong association with low mental distress scores for all ages studied

  • Measures that increase social equality are effective in improving life satisfaction in times of economic crisis

    Open Access•Jocelyne Clench‐Aas, Arne Holte•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

The financial crisis stimulated the use of welfare generosity in Europe and strengthened the positive relationship between welfare generosity and LS. Social inequality, unemployment and welfare generosity played significant mediator roles between the crisis and LS, with increased welfare generosity far more strongly associated with increased LS. Measures that increase social equality in a country and thereby increase equal opportunity for all soc…

  • The relationship between physical functional limitations, and psychological distress

Open Access•Ingeborg Flåten Backe, Grete Grindal Patil et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2017

The aim of this study was to examine associations between selected physical functional limitations related to performing daily activities and psychological distress. We also aimed to investigate if these associations vary across age (moderation), and to explore pain, sense of mastery and social support as potential moderators and mediators. The study was based on pooled data from two rounds (2008 and 2012) of a Norwegian nationally representative…

  • The perceived constraints subscale of the Sense of Mastery Scale

    Open Access•Jocelyne Clench‐Aas, Jocelyne Clench-Aas et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2016

  • Peer Victimization and Related Mental Health Problems in Early Adolescence

    Open Access•Anurajee Rasalingam, Jocelyne Clench‐Aas et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Early Adolescence•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 5

Peer victimization is a widespread phenomenon especially prevalent in early adolescence. This study investigates the prevalence of peer victimization and its association with mental health problems and impact on everyday life, and the possible mediating effect of parental and peer support. Data are based on a cross-sectional health survey ( N = 9,707) among adolescents (10-13 years) and their parents ( N = 8,210). The Strengths and Difficulties Q…

  • The relationship between negative life events, psychological distress and life satisfaction

Open Access•Gunnvor Marum, Jocelyne Clench‐Aas et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2013

  • Dimensionality and measurement invariance in the Satisfaction with Life Scale in Norway

    Open Access•Jocelyne Clench‐Aas, Jocelyne Clench-Aas et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2011

In conclusion, the results in this Norwegian study seem to confirm that a unidimensional structure is acceptable, but that a modified single-factor model with correlations between error terms of items 4 and 5 is preferred. Additionally, comparisons may be made between the genders. Caution must be exerted when comparing age groups

  • Construct validity of the five‐factor Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) in pre‐, early, and late adolescence

Open Access•Betty Van Roy, Marijke Veenstra et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Psychology and…•2008

Background: The Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) is designed to measure psychological adjustment in children and adolescents. Psychometric evaluations of the instrument have shown satisfactory convergent and discriminant validity, while factor analysis studies have shown mixed results across countries. In the present study, the construct validity of the five‐factor SDQ is evaluated in a large community sample of Norwegian pre‐, earl…
